Sr. HSE Manager

About the role

The Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Manager – Human & Organizational Performance (HOP) is a key leader responsible for driving a strong, sustainable safety culture across BlueScope's steel manufacturing operations. This role blends strategic leadership with hands-on execution, focusing on advancing HSE systems, reducing risk, and improving operational performance through the application of HOP principles.

Responsibilities

• Partner with Plant Managers to provide expert guidance and technical direction to ensure safe and compliant operations

• Promote a positive safety culture through effective communication, training, and employee engagement initiatives

• Analyze human performance factors (e.g., decision-making, cognitive biases, behaviors) contributing to safety incidents and identify improvement opportunities

• Collaborate cross-functionally to design and implement targeted interventions that enhance safety outcomes

• Assess operational risks related to human error, organizational dynamics, and process gaps; implement mitigation strategies

• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and corporate HSE regulations and standards

• Integrate HOP principles into existing HSE systems, processes, and programs

• Develop and deliver training on human performance, error reduction, and safety leadership across all levels of the organization

Qualifications

• Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Management/Engineering (or equivalent experience), 6–8 years experience in heavy industrial or high-hazard manufacturing, deep knowledge of regulatory frameworks and compliance strategy, strong leadership, crisis management, and decision-making skills, demonstrated expertise in HOP, system safety, and risk-based decision-making

• Preferred Qualifications: CSP, ASP, or equivalent professional certification, experience leading enterprise or multi-site HSE initiatives, proven ability to influence senior leaders without direct authority
