Sr Histotechnologist - Pathology

About the role

The Senior Histotechnologist performs oversight functions in accordance with federal and state accreditation agencies on all diagnostic tests in the pathology department to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, ensuring validity and accuracy of test results. This role oversees laboratory testing tasks of various complexities while working as a member of the Health First laboratory leadership team to ensure a no-harm, high-quality, consumer-centric experience.

Responsibilities

• Performs oversight tasks, in lieu of supervisor, on all pathology testing of various complexities in a timely and efficient manner using lab equipment, devices, or manual methods.
• Assists with any lab department as assigned by lab leadership.
• Oversees pathologic processes and analyses of various specimen types or tissues, including but not limited to:
  • Tissue processing, staining, and quality control
  • Frozen sections, accessioning, coverslip and labeling
  • Chemical waste disposal and preparation for send-out
  • Special procedures assistance (fine needle aspiration, renal & muscle biopsies)
• Ensures departmental compliance with Health First policies and procedures, as well as federal and state accreditation agency requirements.
• Performs and assigns quality control tasks on laboratory tests to ensure accuracy and validity.
• Assists lab supervisor in validating new tests, equipment, or methodologies.
• Performs and assigns regular, periodic equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting tasks on lab analyzers.
• Commits to meeting departmental goals and improving performance metrics.
• Uses various electronic medical record (EMR) applications for patient records and results, ensuring departmental competency in EMR use.
• Ensures completion of all initial, semi-annual, and annual competencies.
• Meets departmental staffing demands and demonstrates effective time management.
• Communicates effectively within the laboratory, external clinical departments, healthcare professionals, clients, and customers using AIDET principles.
• Reports issues and departmental needs to the supervisor.
• Cross-trains in other laboratory departments or performs other lab-related tasks as directed by the supervisor.
• Complies with Health First I-CARE values and demonstrates effective communication with co-workers and management, including proper escalation when necessary.

Requirements

• Education: Associate of Science degree or equivalent field, as outlined by state licensure (degree not required if grandfathered by the state).
• Licensure: Histology Technologist licensure by the State of Florida, in accordance with CLIA.
• Work Experience: 2 years as a Histology Technologist.
• Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Must pass a color blindness test.
  • Proficient in required computer applications.
  • Able to work autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Strong skills in critical thinking, prioritization, organization, and communication (written and verbal in English).

Preferred Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor of Science in an equivalent or related field, as outlined by CLIA.
• Licensure: Histotechnologist Supervisor license by the State of Florida.
• Certification: HTL (ASCP).
• Work Experience: 5 years as a Histology Technologist.

Physical Requirements

• Able to endure an 8+ hour workday during periods of high demand.
• Visual acuity and manual dexterity to perform clinical and technical tasks.
• Must be able to lift 10-20 lbs. unassisted.
• Hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
• May require travel to various facilities within and beyond the county perimeter; may require use of a personal vehicle.
