Sr Engineer - Transact Team
About the role
The Transact team builds and supports Target’s in-store point-of-sale checkout applications across Front Lane, Self-Checkout, and other transaction experiences. These applications are used by millions of guests and team members, run on more than 50,000 registers, and support over $80 billion in annual transactions across Target stores.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, modernize and maintain frontend applications for Target’s in-store POS checkout experiences
- Build modern, scalable user interfaces using React, React Router, TypeScript/Javascript
- Integrate frontend applications with REST APIs, enterprise services, payments flows, and store infrastructure
- Write maintainable, well-structured code with a focus on quality, reliability, accessibility, and long-term supportability
- Create and maintain automated tests using tools such as Jest and Playwright
- Participate in design discussions, technical planning, code reviews, and architecture decisions
- Collaborate with Product, UX, Store Operations, Payments, Infrastructure, and Platform Engineering partners
- Support Transact as a P1 production application through a rotation-based support model
- Help triage and resolve production issues, improve observability, reduce recurring incidents, and strengthen the reliability of Target’s checkout experience
Qualifications
- 4-year degree or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of software development experience
- Strong frontend engineering experience with TypeScript, JavaScript, React, Node.js and modern frontend architecture
- Experience building applications that integrate with REST APIs and enterprise systems
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern deployment practices
- Experience writing automated tests and supporting quality engineering practices
- Ability to debug complex issues across frontend applications, APIs, infrastructure, and production environments
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions, risks, and tradeoffs clearly
- Able to work independently with minimal assistance while contributing effectively as part of a broader team
- A strong sense of ownership for production quality, reliability, maintainability, and user impact
- Ability to build alignment around team priorities and contribute to a healthy engineering culture
- Curiosity and commitment to continuous learning through formal training, self-directed education, experimentation, and hands-on delivery
- Interest in exploring innovation and AI capabilities that improve engineering productivity and user experiences
