Sr. Engineer, Packaging
About the role
THE ROLE: Sr. Engineer, Packaging will work at our state of art Innovation and Manufacturing facility in here Winston-Salem, NC. Will design and optimize product packaging to ensure product integrity and appeal under varying distribution and other conditions. Tests, analyzes, and selects materials for packaging based on durability, cost effectiveness, and production line compatibilities. Maintains w/continual improvement activities to ensure existing packaging quality. Design and “hands on” experience with a variety of packaging concepts/ practices and procedures. Experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. May participate/lead activities with diverse projects as it relates to packaging concepts/designs. Implementing actions to ensure desired results are achieved w/efficiency and cost effectiveness. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
Responsibilities
- Support Herbalife global rebranding and packaging modernization initiatives by designing, testing, validating and launching new package brand imagery and forms.
- As part of New Product Development and Speed To Market project teams, act as the packaging SME to complete all required packaging tasks, ensuring launch schedules are met.
- Provide design concepts/technical support to Marketing/Manufacturing/Sourcing/R&D and Quality groups related to the production and packaging of Herbalife products.
- Works closely with all levels of Strategic Sourcing, Packaging Component suppliers, Contract Manufacturers and Herbalife Manufacturing to test, qualify and launch packaging changes and new packaging components.
- Strong project management skills including balancing multiple priorities. Leads/participates in multi-functional teams for multitude of various continuous improvement/new product introduction projects.
- Leads packaging development and improvement projects to meet Corporate/regulatory requirements. Builds Project Plans/Coordinating resources to ensure project achievements are met within timelines/Quality/Budget work.
- Identifies groundbreaking technologies within the organization with current packaging industry innovations. Generates/reviews and approves product engineering change orders/packaging process changes/packaging related requirements (including label specifications).
- Maintains documentation/records with accuracy to meet corporate and regulatory expectations.
- Develops written protocols for plant trials, packaging component testing, and supports protocol development for IQ, OQ and PQ of capital equipment.
- Conducts packaging component/material tests, completes test protocols and leads plant trials at Torrance Packaging Laboratory, Lake Forest, Winston-Salem and Contract Manufacturer facilities.
- Designs product packaging for integrity and transportation robustness following ASTM/ISO/Local-regional guidelines accordingly.
- Prepares project capital expenditures for new packaging processes and equipment with proper justification as required.
- Conducts failure investigations and root cause analysis for customer complaints, plant and supplier issues.
- Writes packaging validation protocols and reports for the qualification of new packaging or packaging revisions.
- Independently plan, implement, and analyze plant trials.
- Conduct in-depth technical feasibility assessments on packaging design, including sustainability impact, supply chain, manufacturing, cost drivers, and consumer impact.
- Based on purpose of packaging and physical properties/handling requirements, develops/directs development of drawings/specifications/samples with written analysis of proposed packaging to present designs for approval.
- Leverage technical expertise within WW Packaging and Design Engineering Team if necessary.

Qualifications
- Skills: Familiar-working knowledge with ASTM/ISO/FDA CAPA and Qualification-Validation/Audit procedures Experience in packaging engineering design w/ structured problem solving/use of statistical tools. Good written and oral Communication skills with proven track record to establish and maintain effective communications, internally and with external manufacturing partners at all levels. Self-driven with initiative/creativity and ability to operate with minimal supervision. Results-Success oriented, being agile and flexible with ability to lead and motivate during continuous change. Experience: Minimum 5-7 years of experience in Packaging Engineering for regulated products. Training and experience in Lean and Six Sigma, or equivalent desired and/or exposure to concepts of Six Sigma, TPM, OEE and other Lean Manufacturing tools desired. Product Manufacturing Experience in Food/Dietary Supplement/Pharmaceuticals, working in a cGMP complaint-regulatory environment. Experience with compendial packaging test methods (ie. ASTM) and operation of packaging related measurement and test equipment. Education: Bachelor in Packaging Engineering/Packaging Science/Industrial-Manufacturing Engineering or equivalent. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: CAD experience.

Prepare Analytical reports for management based on raw data. Provide effective reporting for accountability to performance goals. Perform and provide data analysis to help drive decisions and present to management for support of existing/new initiatives.
