About the role

Corning is one of the world’s leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer designs and develops mechanical systems that transition advanced technologies from R&D into scalable, production-ready manufacturing. This role converts early-stage concepts into robust mechanical designs for automation systems, tooling, fixtures, custom equipment, and precision assemblies, supporting the full design lifecycle from concept through pilot, NPI, technology transfer, and manufacturing deployment.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components, assemblies, automation systems, tooling, fixtures, and custom equipment for advanced manufacturing applications
  • Apply DFM/DFA principles to develop robust, serviceable, cost-effective, and scalable designs
  • Partner with mechanical, process, controls, manufacturing, and quality teams to deliver integrated production-ready solutions
  • Support technology transfer, pilot builds, NPI, and production scale-up from R&D into manufacturing
  • Perform tolerance stack-up analysis, apply GD&T, and select appropriate materials for machined parts, sheet metal, weldments, and precision assemblies
  • Manage design documentation, BOMs, revisions, and ECO/ECR processes within PDM/PLM systems
  • Support troubleshooting, root cause analysis, design validation, and continuous improvement as systems are deployed and optimized
  • Partner with suppliers, machine shops, contract manufacturers, and integrators to support manufacturability, cost, and supplier qualification activities

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of mechanical design experience in manufacturing, automation, industrial equipment, or capital equipment environments
  • Experience designing mechanisms, structural assemblies, and precision components intended for production use
  • Experience supporting technology transfer, NPI, production scale-up, and production readiness from R&D or pilot environments
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD and detailed drawing tools such as SolidWorks, Creo, Siemens NX, Autodesk Inventor, or equivalent
  • Experience working cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Experience managing design documentation in PDM/PLM systems and through ECO/ECR change processes
  • Ability to travel up to 50% domestically, with occasional international travel

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of relevant experience; advanced degree may be considered in lieu of some experience
  • MS or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
  • Strong experience with GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA/DFMA, FMEA, FEA, and design validation processes
  • Background in industrial automation, motion control, mechatronics, pneumatic/hydraulic systems, or high-throughput manufacturing equipment
  • Experience with PDM/PLM platforms such as Windchill, Teamcenter, or Enovia
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Kaizen, Six Sigma, and structured NPI processes

This position does not support immigration sponsorship.

Pay

The range for this position is $83,134.00 – $114,310.00 assuming full-time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.

Benefits

  • Company-wide bonuses and long-term incentives aligned with key business results
