About the Role
This senior-level engineering role will lead and support protection and control engineering efforts for electrical substation rebuilds, asset replacements, and innovation opportunities such as Digital Smart Substations. The position involves managing complex, fast-paced initiatives critical to grid reliability, capacity expansion, and system performance. The role may require working extended hours during storms or other energy delivery emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Leads and performs assignments in specialized areas requiring extensive engineering expertise, maintaining state-of-the-art credentials (25%).
- Leads and performs engineering tasks and projects associated with critical or analytical engineering projects, including field testing, troubleshooting, and peer review (30%).
- Evaluates, develops, implements, and leads projects with significant financial and operational impact; develops initial commissioning plans (10%).
- Participates in department planning through field/site walkdowns, meetings, budget recommendations, and performance monitoring (5%).
- Performs assignments independently and may lead multi-discipline teams, including oversight of contractors (5%).
- Serves as an expert in a specialized area and acts as an expert witness or provides expert opinions (5%).
- Provides recommendations to management and implements action plans to improve performance and cost-effectiveness (5%).
- Provides detailed technical training, mentorship, peer review, and guidance to others (5%).
- Participates in technical and industry societies to enhance knowledge of new technologies and recommend business strategies (5%).
Requirements
- Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Licensed Professional Engineer.
- 7+ years of professional engineering experience (6+ years with a Master’s degree or PE license).
- Knowledge of engineering designs, principles, and practices.
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex electrical and mechanical systems.
- Detailed knowledge of applicable standards, codes, methods, and practices unique to protection and controls engineering.
- Thorough knowledge and experience in unique areas of engineering expertise.
- Ability to apply advanced engineering principles to resolve complex issues.
- Minimum of three related career experiences (e.g., changes in technical job responsibilities) or leadership in a recognized industry committee, or a Professional Engineer’s License, advanced technical degree, MBA, or Project Management Certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree or graduate-level work in Engineering, Business Administration, or Project Management Certification.
- Licensed Professional Engineer.
- Strong teamwork, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate with all management levels.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Working knowledge of analysis software packages such as CYMDIST, PSS/E, Python, PSCAD, MATLAB, MATHCAD, Aspen OneLiner, Aspen Relay Database, SEL-5030, SEL RTAC.
- Experience with transmission and substation projects, including air-insulated and gas-insulated substations.
- Experience in transmission line, transformer, bus, feeder, and capacitor protection systems and settings.
- Experience performing fault studies on transmission lines and distribution feeders for relay settings.
- Experience in substation Remote Terminal Unit (RTU), annunciator, metering, capacitor control, and Load Tap Changer (LTC) control systems.
- Experience in RTU setting development (e.g., SEL RTAC, SSNET).
- Knowledge of PJM interconnection process and utility standards.
