Sr. Embedded Wireless Modem Engineer
About the role
We are looking for a Senior Embedded Wireless Modem Engineer to take ownership of the systems that keep our drones connected, coordinated, and performing flawlessly in the sky. This is not a narrow, siloed role—you’ll be working across the full stack of wireless communication: from PHY-layer protocol design and signal processing to embedded integration, RF optimization, and real-world validation. Your work will directly impact how hundreds (or thousands) of drones communicate reliably in complex, high-stakes environments. You’ll be hands-on with everything from modem development and firmware to lab testing and live field deployments—solving tough problems around interference, synchronization, range, and reliability. You’ll also play a key role in getting our systems certified and production-ready, working closely with external labs and internal hardware/software teams.
Responsibilities
- Owning the design, development, and optimization of radio modems across sub-GHz (868/915 MHz) and 2.4 GHz ISM bands
- Building robust wireless communication systems using modern RF transceivers (e.g., AT86RF215 and similar)
- Developing and optimizing PHY-layer protocols, including modulation, synchronization, and timing
- Designing signal processing algorithms (filtering, timing recovery, detection) for reliable communication
- Implementing channel coding, error correction, and spread spectrum techniques (FHSS, DSSS)
- Driving system-level RF performance through link budget, coexistence, and optimization analysis
- Integrating RF systems with embedded platforms (MCUs) and developing low-level drivers/firmware (C/C++)
- Debugging and optimizing hardware–firmware interactions in close collaboration with electronics teams
- Running lab and field testing to validate RF performance in real-world conditions
- Leading radio certification efforts (CE, FCC, RED, ETSI), including test planning and execution
- Partnering with external EMC labs and resolving compliance issues through certification cycles
- Supporting system validation and large-scale deployment testing
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Communications Engineering, or a related field
- Proven experience developing radio modems in ISM bands (sub-GHz and/or 2.4 GHz; LoRa, ZigBee, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with RF transceivers (e.g., AT86RF215, TI CC13xx/CC26xx, or similar)
- Strong foundation in digital communication systems (modulation, FEC, synchronization, signal detection)
- Experience with spread spectrum techniques, particularly FHSS
- Solid embedded systems experience (C/C++), including low-level driver and firmware development
- Experience integrating RF ICs with microcontrollers (e.g., STM32 or similar)
- Proficiency with RF measurement tools (spectrum analyzer, VNA, signal generators, oscilloscopes)
- Working knowledge of EMC/EMI principles and RF compliance requirements
- Experience with radio certification (CE, FCC, ETSI) and working with external test labs
- Familiarity with wireless protocols (e.g., proprietary PHYs, IEEE 802.15.4)
- Knowledge of PCB design and RF layout best practices
- Strong problem-solving skills with a structured, independent working style
- Based in the Munich area and willing to work on-site in Gilching
What defines you
- Highly reliable, organized, and execution-focused
- Calm under pressure and effective in an onsite operating environment
- A clear, proactive communicator who escalates issues early and appropriately
- You don’t need to be the “owner of everything” to be high-impact; you like owning your lane and making the overall machine run smoother
- You take pride in making complicated work feel simple for the team around you
- Team-oriented, humble, and eager to learn
- Interested in growing into increased production ownership over time
Benefits
- A fun, creative, and highly effective team with a start-up spirit
- Exciting projects where mechanics, electronics, firmware, and software meet storytelling and arts
- Real responsibility with no daily micro-management — trust and freedom to do your best work
- Space to try new things, learn, and grow with us
- Short decision-making paths, open communication, and strong team spirit
