About the role

The Power Generation Solutions team at Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with extensive experience in energy storage system design, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The ideal candidate will serve as the Subject Matter Expert and technical leader within the team, driving technical decisions that impact AWS' global infrastructure strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs and analysis of different energy storage technologies, including battery energy storage systems, long duration energy storage systems, and utility-scale energy storage
  • Support the integration of energy storage systems with different power sources, such as electric utilities, diesel generators, reciprocating engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, microgrids, distributed energy resources, and renewable energy, to serve data center loads in grid connected or grid independent configurations
  • Develop controls integrations strategies and designs, sequence of operations, and protection and relay schemes for energy storage systems
  • Develop acceptance criteria, test procedures, performance requirements, supplier requirements, and integration designs for energy storage systems, components, and products
  • Understand the design and functionality of the global data center fleet, including existing, upcoming, and unique site designs
  • Interpret, evaluate, and develop Single Line Drawings (SLD), engineering drawings, equipment submittals, equipment specifications documentation, and performance data to advance concepts and solutions
  • Provide feedback to the Design Engineering teams for design revisions for new data centers as well as to Field Engineering for operational data center upgrades
  • Work on concurrent projects in multiple geographical regions
  • Lead the group and collaborate with other teams
  • Offer creative, out-of-the-box solutions and have fun while working hard

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related field
  • 6+ years of experience leading energy storage designs for utility-scale or complex mission critical facilities combined with 4+ years of design or operational support for energy storage systems
  • In-depth knowledge of continuous operating redundant electrical systems and power infrastructure, including uninterruptable power sources, medium and low voltage electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, automatic/static transfer switches
  • Experience and knowledge of inverter controls, EMS, and closed-loop control optimization
  • Experience and knowledge of medium-voltage and high-voltage equipment, including substation configurations, protection requirements, and integration of energy storage systems
  • Ability to interpret wiring diagrams, single and three-line diagrams, submittals, sequence of operations, and electrical drawing packages

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • 10+ years of direct experience with the design, construction, operation, or maintenance of mission critical data centers or power infrastructure. System Matter Expert level of understanding of both electrical equipment and designs related to data centers
  • Familiarity with power flow studies, substation design, protection coordination, and utility interconnection requirements, emerging power generation and energy storage technologies, and power distribution for large scale mission critical facilities, including working on microgrid design and controls, and distributed energy resources
  • Experience and knowledge of power generation equipment, systems, and controls, including diesel generators, distributed energy resources, gas turbines, and renewable energy
  • Experience with gathering, compiling, and analyzing data to identify availability and/or performance risks within the design and operations of critical power infrastructure, including an understanding of data analysis methodologies and statistical techniques
  • Experience with developing solutions and executing plans on fast-track design/build projects and/or multiple significant upgrade projects
  • Experience with commissioning and/or performance testing of critical infrastructure and the associated controls systems for mission critical environments
  • Experience with scripting languages (e.g., Python, R), or statistical/mathematical software (e.g., R, SAS, Matlab, etc.)
  • Possess excellent attention to detail and communication skills in order to maintain high quality standards for being organized, setting priorities, meeting deadlines, and staying within budgets
