Sr. Electrical Design Engineer, HVMV Engineering

AWS is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer to join a global engineering team responsible for the design and continuous innovation of our expanding data center footprint. Engineers at Amazon work on resilient, cost-effective electrical distribution systems to ensure world-class uptime for our customers.

Responsibilities

• Be a leader within the group and external teams supporting data centers.
• Work with internal teams to understand user requirements.
• Participate in site selection reviews.
• Create data center substation electrical designs and collaborate with other disciplines to produce construction documents.
• Ensure designs meet or exceed quality requirements and stay within budget.
• Specify appropriate electrical equipment with regional vendors and manufacturers.
• Understand and define site utility requirements with local utilities.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and municipal requirements and building codes.
• Review and approve equipment submittals.
• Define project scope and provide technical support for information requests during construction phases.
• Work with commissioning teams to test and validate electrical systems.
• Manage concurrent projects across multiple geographical regions.
• Travel to sites for site reviews and provide engineering evaluations, audits, and startup support.

Requirements

• 6+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission-critical facilities, including data centers, power generation, or oil and gas facilities.
• Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
• Experience with design or construction administration of various electrical distribution systems from low voltage to high voltage.
• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or 12+ years of related electrical experience, including 5 years of substation design experience.
• Cumulative 7+ years of experience with industrial or commercial electrical design.
• 4+ years of experience developing design documentation for construction and/or permitting.

Qualifications

• Professional Engineering License.
• Excellent understanding of the National Electrical Code.
• Solid understanding of critical data center electrical equipment.
• Leadership and problem-solving skills.
• Motivated and dependable individual.
• Ability to research new designs, technologies, and construction methods.
• Ability to carry new design concepts through exploration, development, and deployment.
• Strong communication and attention to detail.
• Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, and automatic/static transfer switches.
• Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and system design.
• Previous consultant negotiation and management skills.
• Experience with fast-track design/build projects and multiple significant upgrade projects.
• Experience with large-scale technical operations or large-scale compute farms.
• Knowledge of building codes and regulations including Life Safety, IBC, NFPA, NEC, and OSHA.
