About The Role

The Public Radio Business Network, formed by Marketplace and American Public Media, aims to deepen editorial relationships with 800+ partner stations. It prioritizes collaboration, adds a local lens to economic storytelling, and amplifies regional content for Marketplace shows. We seek an experienced collaborative multichannel leader to build something new and support the public media ecosystem.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a bridge between local and national journalism by fostering strong editorial relationships with station partners, their reporters, and the Marketplace newsroom.
  • Collaborate with stations and Marketplace editors to identify coverage priorities, editorial streams, and special projects that strengthen Marketplace's regional reporting footprint.
  • Develop, manage, and edit joint programming projects with stations, including regional business reports, multichannel content, and joint events that highlight local economic stories.
  • Plan, negotiate, and assign coverage to ensure timely and relevant reports for Marketplace programs and joint projects.
  • Coordinate with digital and social teams to deliver compelling, multi-platform content, including digital adaptations of the reporting projects, regional campaigns.
  • Assign, edit, and shape multichannel elements that meet Marketplace’s high standards for originality, clarity, and insight.
  • Provide editorial support, guidance, and reporting resources to stations with limited dedicated business or economic coverage.
  • Host regular editorial meetings with station content leaders to generate story ideas and shared projects and to ensure a consistent pipeline of high-quality station-originated content for Marketplace programs.
  • Partner with APM Distribution to help expand APM’s digital underwriting network, supporting increased revenue opportunities for stations.
  • Maintain and communicate production schedules, deadlines, and editorial plans for assigned elements.
  • Respond rapidly to breaking news and plan proactively to anticipate upcoming economic trends and events.
  • Ensure all work meets Marketplace’s journalistic standards for accuracy, fairness, balance, and editorial excellence.
  • As needed, supervise team members—providing clear editorial direction, coaching, mentorship, and performance feedback that builds staff skills.
  • Foster a creative, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.
  • Model strong editorial judgment and production leadership under deadline pressure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education And Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of ten years of experience in editing, reporting, producing, or related journalistic work.
  • Minimum of five years of supervisory or management experience demonstrating the ability to set and uphold high editorial standards while effectively leading, inspiring, and developing teams.

  • Excellent editorial judgment and a deep commitment to accuracy, fairness, and editorial integrity.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a high-performing newsroom.
  • Advanced editing skills capable of shaping nuanced and multi-layered coverage of economic and financial topics.
  • Strong ability to develop compelling story ideas, manage assignments, and edit for broadcast and digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver national-quality journalism on deadline.
  • Strong decision-making skills in assessing credibility, narrative value, and newsworthiness.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with staff, contributors, and freelance reporters.
  • Ability to motivate, mentor, and grow early-career and experienced journalists.
  • Strong critical reading, analytical, and listening skills.
  • Deep understanding of and commitment to the mission and values of public radio.
  • Excellent communication and team-building skills, with the ability to resolve conflict and strengthen team culture.

Preferred Skills And Experience

  • Experience in national news or production, strongly preferred.
  • Established relationships and credibility within the broadcast journalism community.
  • Background in business, finance, or economic reporting is a plus.
  • Understanding and empathy for the social and structural issues connected to money and the economy.
  • Ability to record and edit audio, operate remote and studio equipment, and prepare content for broadcast.
  • Previous supervisory or editorial team leadership experience.
