About the role

The Senior Director, Medical & Scientific Affairs – Specialty Testing is responsible for setting the vision and strategic direction for the Specialty Testing business area and leading daily business operations support related to product development, clinical research, product quality, compliance, commercial/marketing activities, and customer interactions. This senior role assists the Chief Medical Officer as the medical representative of Beckman to external partners and professional societies. The position focuses on a key growth area for Beckman Coulter, providing the successful candidate an exciting opportunity to build and grow the Specialty Testing business leadership, ultimately impacting patient outcomes.

The Senior Director will partner as a thought leader and Beckman Coulter representative with senior external customers, bringing our technology, patient focus, and commitment to the market. Specialty Testing includes Urinalysis, Hematology, Bone Health and Anemia, and rare diseases not captured in other Medical and Scientific Affairs areas. The role supports business team leaders in driving forward key strategic projects and drives the scientific and clinical positioning of products pre- and post-launch to ensure optimal clinical utility globally.

This position reports to the Chief Medical Officer and is part of the Medical & Scientific Affairs organization, a team of medical specialists dedicated to all medical aspects of safe and effective therapeutic areas. The role may be fully remote, covering a global business area. Beckman Coulter has major sites in South Florida, Southern California, Hebron (Kentucky), and Minneapolis (Minnesota), as well as major hubs in Europe and Asia.

Responsibilities

• Steer collaborative efforts between business leaders and research teams to define bench and human clinical research priorities for product development, regulatory submissions, and marketing based on intended clinical applications, business, and regulatory strategy.
• Demonstrate a record of strong collaboration with internal stakeholders across matrix organizations, sharing information, achieving collective goals, facilitating open discussions on risk/reward/resources, and developing talent within and outside the Medical & Scientific Affairs function.
• Establish and cultivate strategic academic partnerships suited for future research and innovation.
• Work with collaborators and product teams to solicit investigator-initiated research proposals aligned with Beckman’s research needs, including specific disease states.
• Lead and own global strategies for health economics, policy, and reimbursement (HEPR) for Beckman solutions.
• Build, sustain, and serve as the leader for influential relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to drive scientific exchange and shape the future of hematology, urinalysis, and potentially coagulation technologies.
• Communicate and translate clinical/scientific insights and research concepts from KOLs into actionable guidance for product development teams.
• Strategically support the development and execution of pre-launch product initiatives, commercialization, and life cycle management of products through education, innovation, evidence generation, and research—identifying technologies and assays that will fuel future growth.

Requirements

• Doctorate-level degree (M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., or DNP) with a minimum of 20 years of medical and clinical affairs experience.
• Board-certified hematologist.
• Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate clinical and business issues to diverse audiences.
• Strong leadership skills, able to create a dynamic environment fostering transparency, collaboration, and innovative thinking.
• Strong problem-solving and negotiation skills; ability to influence and make recommendations at multiple levels of the company.
• Minimum of 5 years of project management experience to establish strategic goals and prioritize, plan, delegate, and evaluate deliverables with a continuous improvement mindset.
• Extensive clinical experience and a knowledge base beyond hematology, extending to complementary areas such as bone health, anemia, and immunology.

Preferred Qualifications

• 10+ years of product and domain knowledge of healthcare technologies and market trends.
• 8+ years of experience working in the medical technology, medical device, or pharmaceutical industry in Medical or Clinical Affairs roles.
• MBA or Master’s degree in a business-related field.
• Experience leading teams of high-performing professionals with a track record of identifying, coaching, and elevating talent.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements

• Ability to travel a minimum of 50% of the time (domestic and international).

Pay

The annual salary range for this role is $260,000 – $300,000. This job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
