About the role
As a Senior Data Scientist at General Mills, you will apply your expertise in machine learning, data mining, and information retrieval to design, prototype, and build next-generation advanced analytics engines and services. You will collaborate with product owners, business partners, and other Data Scientists to define technical problem statements and test hypotheses. You will develop efficient and accurate analytical models that mimic business decisions.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement AI solutions for semi-structured data, covering problem framing, data curation, and evaluation across classification, entity extraction, and summarization.
- Develop high-quality Agentic AI and RAG workflows, optimizing ingestion, chunking, embeddings, and vector indexing with established frameworks and stores to maximize retrieval performance.
- Technically evaluate novel technology to inform effort/improvement tradeoffs.
- Quickly learn and iterate with novel technologies, particularly around generative AI.
- Monitor and improve model performance metrics and recommendations, incorporating feedback from business partners.
- Implement generative AI techniques and technologies to solve business problems, including prompt and LLM fine-tuning, RAG, agentic workflows, and tool designs.
- Help business stakeholders translate their objectives into measurable outcomes.
- Apply critical thinking to frame business needs into statistical problems and develop solutions balancing technical completeness and timely value delivery.
- Explain the ‘why and how’ of your recommendations to build trust in your solutions.
- Advocate and educate on the value of data-driven decision-making and analytical methods.
- Identify and develop long-term data science processes, frameworks, tools, and standards.
- Collaborate with the team, ask questions, engage, and solicit feedback from other Data Scientists.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, Statistics, or other related fields.
- 6+ years of relevant experience with at least 2 years in Data Science.
- Strong foundation in statistical reasoning and critical thinking, with a proven track record of solving stakeholder problems.
- Experience with Python, including exposure to package development and foundational programming principles.
- Experience with generative AI concepts, including embeddings, LLMs, agents, and RAG.
- Experience writing complex SQL queries.
- Understanding of data warehousing and complex databases.
- Experience with machine learning and data visualization tools.
- Strong number sense and ability to identify and address questionable data.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to frame problems in familiar language and present solutions translating to business value.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing and deploying Python packages and managing large-scale projects.
- Experience developing/deploying generative AI technology, including agents, RAG, or similar.
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform or similar technology.
- Applied experience in consumer goods/supply chain.
- Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or Statistics.

Pay
The salary range for this position is $110,800 - $184,800. Pay is determined by factors including education, skills, work experience, and certifications. Beyond base salary, General Mills offers a competitive Total Rewards package focusing on overall well-being, including health benefits, retirement and financial wellbeing, time off programs, wellbeing support, and perks. You may also be eligible to participate in an annual incentive program based on individual and organizational performance.
