Sr. Controls Design Engineer
The Bay Area R&D and Facilities team at The Bay Area R&D and Facilities is seeking a Controls Engineer to join a dynamic team focused on advancing sustainable energy solutions. This role involves close collaboration with design, construction, commissioning, operations, maintenance, and IT/OT teams.
What You'll Do
Establish and maintain automation, controls, and instrumentation design standards and best practices.
Lead automation scope definition, execution strategies, and technical decision-making across projects.
Oversee development and review of control philosophies, P&IDs, I/O lists, network architectures, and logic designs.
Ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, cybersecurity, and safety requirements.
Coordinate automation activities across engineering, operations, maintenance, and IT/OT stakeholders.
Mentor and develop automation engineers, designers, and specialists.
Lead the control system architecture design including the integration of HMI, SCADA, PLC, VFDs, safety PLCs, and 3rd party packaged equipment.
Develop greenfield PLC code with a focus on organized, structured, documented, maintainable, and reusable code.
Work closely with the process design teams to develop process control narratives and process and instrumentation diagrams.
Implement and manage continuous process optimization including the addition of advanced and conventional technologies.
Support a 24/7 production/manufacturing facility.
Participate in process hazard reviews and HazOps.
Manage and implement safety-rated systems.
What You'll Bring
7+ years of design experience with instrumentation, controls, and process automation.
Experience with Siemens PLC and Ignition SCADA systems.
Experience supporting a 24/7 production/manufacturing facility.
Additional experience working with additional PLC platforms: Siemens, Beckhoff, Allen-Bradley, Omron.
Experience working with modern communication protocols: Profinet, EtherCAT, Ethernet IP, Modbus TCP.
Evidence of exceptional ability, including a strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and demonstrated ability to leverage this understanding to solve challenging technical problems.
Demonstrated experience in the execution of controls projects from concept development through commissioning and ramp-up.
Demonstrated experience supporting a running production facility.
Experience with safety rated systems.
