Responsibilities

  • Estimators work with engineers and a design team to gather information and create accurate estimates concerning the costs of construction projects, including personnel, materials, equipment, labor, and time. Their goal is to provide precise information to help with operational and strategic planning.
  • A Project Manager leads and oversees a construction project and collaborates with engineers and architects to develop a plan, create a project time frame, distribute resources, and track progress to ensure timely completion. Their duties include planning, staffing, and supervising employees.
  • Service technicians perform technical repairs and maintenance on a variety of hardware in a facility or in the field. A service technician’s responsibilities can include installing and testing products, diagnosing problems, repairing/replacing equipment, educating clients, and providing customer support. It is also critical that technicians practice safety and keep good records.
  • A construction superintendent manages the day-to-day operations of a construction site, from planning to completion. Their responsibilities include project planning, scheduling, resource management, quality control, safety & compliance, team management, and project documentation.
  • HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) technicians install, repair, maintain, and replace heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in a variety of settings. An HVAC technician may also provide warranty service and should observe strict safety practices and be a good communicator.
  • A journeyman plumber is a skilled worker who focuses on plumbing and drainage systems. They install new systems and related supply lines, or may be required to detect leaks or problems with equipment and/or pipe structure. Journeyman plumbers also maintain and repair installed systems in residential or commercial settings. Knowledge of pipe fittings, plumbing fixtures, and pressure gauges are important skills for a plumber.
  • A journeyman electrician is a skilled worker responsible for the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems. They understand and install, troubleshoot, and repair power equipment and various machinery components while following electrical codes, manuals, specifications, schematics and blueprints.
  • A journeyman pipefitter maintains and sets up pipe systems in industrial environments. They are responsible for installing, repairing, and maintaining piping systems for heating and cooling, high-pressure transport, oil and chemicals, natural gas, and more. They read design specifications to cut and weld pipes, perform routine inspections, and lay pipework.
  • A sheet metal journeyman fabricates, installs, and assembles sheet metal products and systems. Their work with sheet metal may include measuring and marking; shaping (cutting, bending, and straightening); joining (welding, soldering, bolting, or riveting); installing; troubleshooting and repair; and inspecting and testing. Sheet metal journeymen need to be able to read blueprints and schematics.

Qualifications

Specific qualifications vary depending on the position but generally include relevant education, certifications, and experience. For example, estimators typically have a degree in engineering or business, while project managers often hold a bachelor's degree in construction management or a related field. Service technicians usually require a high school diploma or equivalent and certification in their specific field. Construction superintendents typically have a minimum of 5 years of experience in construction management. HVAC technicians must complete an apprenticeship program or have a combination of education and experience. Journeyman plumbers, electricians, and pipefitters typically need a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship program. Sheet metal journeymen usually require a high school diploma or equivalent and completion of an apprenticeship program.
