About the role
Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Sr. Claims Counsel, Lawyers Professional Liability in our North America Insurance Claims team. The position is based in New York, NY, Garden City, NY, Purchase, NY, or Morristown, NJ.
Responsibilities
- Manage a full caseload of Professional Liability claims, primarily Lawyers Professional Liability matters, and make substantive claim decisions.
- Review loss notices, claims documents, and policy language to determine coverage, liability, exposure, and appropriate reserves.
- Provide complex coverage, liability, and damages analysis for Lawyers Professional Liability claims and other lines of business as needed.
- Identify claim trends and emerging exposures, and report them accurately and timely to underwriting and management.
- Support underwriting and other internal teams through legal review, policy drafting, and cross-functional communication.
- Contribute to the Global Claims Team through collaboration on projects, industry engagement, complex claims support, and travel as needed.
Requirements
- Law degree required, with 3–7 years of progressively responsible experience in Lawyers Professional Liability claims handling or related litigation.
- Experience at both a law firm and an insurance carrier is preferred, along with pursuit of an insurance designation such as RPLU or CPCU.
- Proven experience handling complex, high-profile, high-exposure Lawyers Professional Liability claims, including evaluation, negotiation, and settlement.
- Meaningful legal review and policy drafting experience, with the ability to build strong working relationships across departments such as underwriting and actuarial.
- Strong negotiation, analytical, written, organizational, marketing, communication, mediation, and computer skills, including MS Office and claims systems such as Guidewire, Genius, and ImageRight.
Qualifications
- Salary Range: $125,000 – $175,000.

Pay
