Mechanical Engineering and Manufacturing Process Development

Develop, validate and implement sustainable, robust and reliable manufacturing processes, equipment and mechanical systems.

Lead mechanical design and analysis of machine structures, mechanisms, tooling, fixtures, workholding, guarding, piping systems and process equipment.

Apply engineering fundamentals including statics, dynamics, strength of materials, machine design, heat transfer, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics to manufacturing applications.

Create and review engineering calculations, equipment specifications, design packages, tolerance analyses and technical documentation.

  • Use SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent engineering software to develop layouts, models, drawings and design concepts.
  • Provide strong emphasis on fixture and gaging design, development, validation and implementation for safe, repeatable process performance.
  • Use prototyping and structured testing methods to develop engineering samples, verify design intent and reduce technical risk.
  • Partner with New Product Development engineers to evaluate product designs and recommend improvements for manufacturability, assembly, quality and cost.
  • Lead equipment suppliers and integrators in the development and delivery of custom manufacturing solutions.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and breakthrough processes that create a competitive manufacturing advantage.

Fluid Dynamics and Process Utility Systems

Serve as the technical lead for industrial fluid systems involving compressed air, nitrogen, natural gas or propane, water, coolant, lubricants, hydraulic systems, vacuum and process exhaust, as applicable.

  • Perform and document fluid-system calculations including flow rate, pressure drop, velocity, line sizing, Cv, regulator and valve selection, pump or compressor requirements and system capacity.
  • Develop piping and instrumentation diagrams, process flow diagrams, utility schematics, equipment specifications and installation requirements.
  • Select and specify piping, tubing, fittings, valves, regulators, filters, flowmeters, pressure instruments, pumps and other fluid-handling components for compatibility, capacity, accuracy and maintainability.
  • Assess fluid-system behavior across normal operating conditions, startup, shutdown, upset conditions and process extremes.
  • Lead troubleshooting of insufficient flow, pressure instability, contamination, leakage, excessive pressure drop, heat generation, cavitation and other fluid-system performance issues.
  • Plan and execute validation testing to confirm fluid delivery, repeatability, process capability and equipment performance against defined acceptance criteria.
  • Ensure designs incorporate appropriate risk controls, maintainability, isolation points and applicable environmental, health and safety requirements in partnership with EHS and facility stakeholders.

Electrical Controls and PLC Support

Provide supporting electrical-controls expertise for machine integration, commissioning and troubleshooting; this is a secondary responsibility to mechanical and fluid-system ownership.

  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control panel layouts, I/O drawings, network architecture and device documentation.
  • Troubleshoot PLC-controlled equipment, sensors, actuators, interlocks, variable-frequency drives, servo systems, HMIs and industrial communications in partnership with controls engineers and technicians.
  • Perform minor PLC and HMI program modifications within established change-control, backup, validation and safety requirements.
  • Support Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix platforms and Siemens S7 platforms, or equivalent plant-standard controls.
  • Develop functional descriptions, sequence-of-operation documents, I/O requirements and controls acceptance criteria for equipment suppliers and integrators.
  • Verify that mechanical, fluid and electrical-control interfaces function together as an integrated system during design reviews, FAT, installation, SAT and production qualification.

Process Validation, Reliability and Continuous Improvement

Apply Design of Experiments, FMEA, PFMEA, statistical data analysis, capability analysis, risk analysis, flow layout and related engineering tools to evaluate and improve processes.

  • Perform calculation-based and software-aided analyses to demonstrate process reliability, capability, safety and sustainability.
  • Develop test plans, acceptance criteria and validation reports for mechanical, fluid and integrated automated systems.
  • Use root-cause analysis and structured problem-solving methods to resolve chronic equipment, quality and process issues.
  • Test process extremes and create robust risk-assessment matrices that address failure modes, controls, contingencies and recovery plans.
  • Develop multiple technical and commercial scenarios to identify the best total-cost solution while considering quality, safety, delivery, maintainability and schedule.

Project Management and Technical Leadership

Lead mid- to high-complexity manufacturing projects and provide technical direction, engineering judgment and mentorship to engineers, technicians, suppliers and cross-functional team members.

  • Drive strategic cost, quality, safety and delivery initiatives with an aggressive focus on breakthrough process and technology improvements.
  • Develop project scope, technical requirements, schedules, budgets, risk registers, commissioning plans and qualification strategies.
  • Facilitate design reviews and project meetings, document decisions and action items, and maintain accountability to project milestones.
  • Lead equipment installation, commissioning, debug and qualification activities to achieve production, quality and safety targets.
  • Communicate project status, technical risks, financial impacts and recommended decisions through effective written reports and formal presentations.
  • Establish the staffing, training and skill requirements associated with the operational complexity of new processes and equipment.
  • Mentor team members in mechanical design, fluid-system analysis, troubleshooting, validation and disciplined project execution.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally for supplier, machine, installation and concept evaluations.
  • Estimated annual travel is 30% to 40%, with most trips contained within one week and occasional weekend travel.
  • Ability to work hands-on with manufacturing equipment during development, installation, troubleshooting and qualification activities.
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds repeatedly to a height of 3 to 4 feet, with occasional lifting up to 35 pounds.
  • Ability to learn, apply and communicate complex technical material in a manufacturing environment.

What You’ll Bring With You

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical / Industrial Engineering or tenure of 10+ years in engineering title job field with associate degree in Manufacturing, Industrial, Mechanical, or Automation technical areas.
  • Three or more years of progressive manufacturing, mechanical, equipment or process engineering experience, including ownership of complex equipment or process-development projects.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, specifying, analyzing, commissioning or troubleshooting industrial mechanical and fluid systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical controls and PLC-based automation, including the ability to interpret schematics, troubleshoot I/O and sequences, and support minor controlled program changes.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent design software and advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with equipment specifications, supplier management, design reviews, factory acceptance testing, installation, commissioning and production qualification preferred.
  • Experience in metalworking, heat treatment, robotics or automated manufacturing processes is beneficial.
