We are looking for an experienced Sr. Accountant to join a finance team in Yorktown, Virginia. This role is suited for someone who can manage core accounting operations, support accurate financial reporting, and contribute to a disciplined close process. The position also partners with cross-functional teams to strengthen controls, improve reporting quality, and provide meaningful financial insight for business decisions.
Responsibilities
- Lead daily accounting operations across the general ledger, payables, receivables, cash activity, fixed assets, and related financial areas.
- Prepare and record a range of journal entries, including accruals, prepayments, depreciation, reclassifications, intercompany activity, and other period-end adjustments.
- Complete monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliations, investigate variances, and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Support and independently manage assigned portions of the month-end and year-end close to ensure accurate and timely reporting.
- Produce financial statements, management reporting packages, and detailed schedules that support internal decision-making and compliance needs.
- Review account activity and financial results to identify unusual movements, errors, or emerging issues, and recommend corrective action when needed.
- Maintain accurate accounting records in alignment with U.S. GAAP and prepare documentation required for internal and external audit requests.
- Contribute to budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and working capital reviews, including oversight of inventory, receivables, payables, and fixed asset activity.
- Assist with process improvement initiatives, internal control enhancements, and accounting system updates, integrations, or data conversion efforts as needed.
- Provide guidance to accounting staff, review completed work for accuracy, and collaborate with other departments to address financial and operational questions.
Requirements
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including responsibilities consistent with a Senior Accountant level role.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
- Solid knowledge of U.S. GAAP and core accounting practices across financial reporting and close activities.
- Hands-on experience with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close procedures, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Demonstrated ability to prepare, analyze, and interpret financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Proficiency in general ledger accounting, bank and account reconciliations, budgeting, forecasting, and fixed asset accounting.
- Strong Excel skills and the ability to work accurately with detailed financial data and reporting requirements.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to work cross-functionally and support accounting team development.
