Job Summary
The SQL Server Database Administrator is responsible for the architecture, implementation, configuration, maintenance, performance, security, capacity planning, migration, monitoring, troubleshooting, backup, and recovery of all SQL Server relational database systems to ensure high availability and consistent application performance. This role partners with internal IT teams and vendor staff to build, support, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments that power transactional systems and the enterprise data warehouse. The position is also responsible for the ongoing development and support of the SQL Server data warehouse, including operational readiness, data loads, and data modeling to support multiple development teams.
Essential Functions
- Provides end-to-end technical support, capacity planning, and problem resolution for SQL Server environments.
- Provides 24x7 support for critical production systems, including participation in on-call and incident response activities.
- Partners with IT Security to support annual risk assessments and respond to third-party security reviews and audits.
- Designs and implements database architecture aligned with best practices.
- Maintains and enhances high availability and disaster recovery infrastructure, including Always On environments, to support resiliency and performance.
- Performs SQL Server version upgrades in coordination with application requirements and vendor support guidelines.
- Partners with developers to tune complex queries, improve performance, and refine database schemas.
- Supports approved database service requests within established service levels and timeframes.
- Maintains an accurate inventory of SQL Server databases and related platform components.
- Ensures security patches are evaluated and implemented in a timely and effective manner.
- Follows established change management policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education/Work Experience: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, 8+ years of professional experience in Microsoft SQL Server database administration.
- Experience: Performance tuning and optimization using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools, database backup, restore, and recovery models, Windows Server environments, replicated, load-balanced, and high-availability systems, SQL Server high availability and disaster recovery options.
- Knowledge/Skills and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of database design, structure, and theory, strong understanding of database backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures, ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced, changing environment, strong analytical, communication, interpersonal, and project management skills, strong customer service orientation, strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, commitment to continuous learning, familiarity with reporting and data visualization tools, ability to organize work effectively and operate independently.
- Licenses/Certifications: Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) – highly preferred, Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) – preferred, Microsoft Certified IT Specialist (MCITP/MCITS) – preferred.
