About the role

Under direction, plans, organizes, supervises, and teaches fundamental skills and drills to boys and girls ages 5-18.

Responsibilities

• Designs and implements drills for practices, workouts and training.
• Works independently teaching sport relevant skills to participants of various ability levels.
• Meets for 60 minutes per age group once or twice per week for eight weeks.
• Sets up and takes down equipment as needed (indoors or outdoors depending on the sport).
• Maintains participant attendance against rosters to ensure all payments are received.
• Notifies supervisor and/or students of class cancellations (weather or personal).
• Assists supervisor in evaluating the class and making recommendations for improvement.
• Ensures all possible safety measures are observed.
• Identifies and reports any hazards.
• Responds to emergency situations as required; maintains and forwards accurate accident and incident reports to supervisor.
• Provides excellent customer service, including interacting with participants and/or parents to answer questions and resolve problems.
• Reports any issues and concerns to supervisor.
• Attends trainings and meetings as required.

Qualifications

• Education/Experience: Requires High School Diploma or GED. Two or more seasons experience as a participant or coach in the specific sport required. Advanced collegiate level experience (playing or coaching), or advanced certifications in the specified sport is strongly preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Licenses/Certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid, and Concussion Recognition Training certificates, or the ability to obtain all within 30 days of hire.

Skills

• Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the City of Thornton and the department.
• Knowledge of the specific sport that is being taught.
• Knowledge of coaching the specific sport that is being taught to participants of all abilities.
• Knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
• Ability to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid activities.
• Ability to instruct and demonstrate fundamental sports skills to participants of all abilities.
• Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
• Ability to read, interpret and apply operating policies and procedures.
• Ability to react quickly and accurately in emergency situations.
• Ability to listen well and communicate effectively with the public.
• Ability to maintain composure during mentally, physically and emotionally stressful situations.

Physical And Mental Requirements

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and make repetitive motions.
• The employee is required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned.
• The employee is subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
