Sport Official-Part Time - Youth Basketball
About The Role
The City of Kingman is located in Mohave County, approximately 100 miles southeast of Las Vegas and 195 miles northwest of Phoenix. Nestled between the Cerbat and Hualapai mountain ranges along historic Route 66, Kingman offers a small-town feel with a variety of recreational activities such as hiking, biking, camping, golf, and historical attractions.
Distinction Characteristics
This is a part-time, seasonal position that officiates youth sport programs. The Sports Official role includes various assignments with department flexibility to assign employees to sub-classifications. Sub-classification titles and corresponding pay assignments are determined based on the duties performed and qualifications met. Employees will be tracked and documented on Personnel Action Forms, ensuring appropriate payment for each sub-classification and accurate recording of time worked.
Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or Recreation Superintendent and general supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director.
Supervision Exercised
At times, the Sports Official will be responsible for supervising and securing the facility and participants of sports programs.
What You'll Need To Be Successful In This Role
- Minimum age 16 to work in Youth Programs; Minimum age 18 to work in Adult Programs.
- High School Graduate or receipt of GED preferred.
- Prior officiating experience preferred.
- Prior experience in playing or coaching the sport(s) being officiated.
Special Requirements
First Aid/CPR/AED certification preferred. Referee & Umpire Certification through an affiliated organization is recommended.
What You'll Do For The City Of Kingman
- Provide quality officiating during adult or youth sports contests.
- Read and understand local rules as well as national rules of the sports or programs that are being officiated.
- Work at scheduled times and in appropriate attire.
- Develop a positive relationship with the participants and educate when necessary.
- Enforce game rules.
- Maintain appropriate level of control, fairness, and consistency in all game situations.
- Alleviate arguments and unsportsmanlike conduct before they get out of hand.
- Maintain a safe, fun, yet competitive game atmosphere.
- Resolve participant conflicts and disputes with tact and diplomacy.
- Safeguard the safety and sanitary environment and notify the immediate supervisor of any problems and/or concerns.
- Set up and clean up facilities (Volleyball Official).
- Receive, store, and issue sports equipment and supplies (Volleyball Official).
- Aid with pre- and post-game logistics and administrative functions.
- Complete any forms that are needed to be completed.
- Conduct games in an efficient manner within the allotted time and on the day scheduled.
- Maintain a positive relationship with staff, co-workers, participants, and spectators.
- Provide excellent and proficient customer service to both internal and external customers.
- Communicate and act in a professional manner with the public, co-workers, and work contacts.
Peripherals Duties
Perform related duties as required.
Knowledge
Working knowledge of sports and sportsmanship; Sport specific rules and procedures; Safety rules and regulations; Facilities, equipment, and materials utilized in sports programs being officiated.
Skills
- Supervise participants and enforce park, facility, and safety rules.
- Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions.
- Provide basic first aid, CPR, AED.
- Follow and maintain safety standards, and identify safety problems.

- Act confidentially and make quick, accurate judgments based on decisions, particularly while facing adversity.
