Sport and Performance Psychologist/Staff Psychologist

About the Role

The Sport and Performance Psychologist is an embedded position in the Health and Counseling Center (HCC) jointly funded by the Athletic department and the HCC. This role works with intercollegiate student-athletes and serves as a liaison to the athletic department. The Sport and Performance Psychologist is responsible for triaging requests for mental health and performance-based treatment for student-athletes within an integrated healthcare clinic, along with serving student-athletes through regular office hours, educational programming, ADHD evaluations, and consultation with staff within the Department of Athletics and across campus. This is a full-time, 40-hour-a-week, 12-month, benefited position reporting to the Director of Counseling Services.

Responsibilities

• Manage and provide specialized counseling and sport psychology services for the DU Department of Athletics student-athlete population.
• Provide crisis intervention services via daytime crisis systems (Counselor of the Day and Crisis Time coverage) and serve as back-up support for the after-hours on-call system.
• Administer and supervise a limited number of ADHD evaluations for student-athletes.
• Provide direct counseling/psychotherapy services to non-athlete DU students as schedule allows.
• Consult and collaborate closely with the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Pioneer Performance and Head Medical Team Physician to ensure holistic student care.
• Recruit and supervise a clinical sport psychology practicum student.
• Develop and deliver outreach programs, workshops, and psychoeducational group presentations to student-athletes and teams.
• Consult with DU Athletics personnel, parents, faculty, etc., when appropriate and with consent to provide quality care.
• Maintain a diverse network of providers to accommodate student-athlete and Athletic Department preferences both on campus and through outside referrals.
• Maintain clinical records within a HIPAA-compliant medical records system.
• Generate yearly reports related to the volume of clinical and team services.
• Supervise and participate in the development of generalist trainees, including practicum students, interns, and postdoctoral/postgraduate fellows.
• Handle administrative responsibilities such as attending and leading meetings, completing chart notes, responding to communications, reviewing and co-signing supervisees’ notes, and completing committee assignments.
• Demonstrate sensitivity and competency in working with diverse groups.

Requirements

• Licensed or license-eligible within three months in the State of Colorado as a psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.).
• Specialized training in Performance and Sport Psychology.
• Experience with supervision and crisis intervention.
• Experience working with college athletes, preferably in a high-profile intercollegiate athletics setting.
• Experience with ADHD evaluations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certifications or licensure by professional organizations (e.g., APA, ACA, CCAASP).
• Experience working in competitive athletic environments.
• Experience working with a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience with injury-related psychological services (e.g., health or pain psychology).
• Experience in a university/college counseling center.
• Experience with outreach, prevention, and groups.

Skills

• Sophisticated written and verbal communication skills, including outreach presentations, meetings, and clinical documentation.
• Basic understanding of math and statistics; expertise in Excel and project management preferred.
• Ability to understand and relate to complex theories and concentrate on fine details amid constant interruptions.
• Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to function independently, supervise personnel, and maintain confidentiality.
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, coworkers, and departments while adapting to change.

Working Environment

• Standard office environment with moderate to high stress levels and frequent unexpected interruptions.
• Quiet to moderate noise level.
• Ability to work in front of a computer for extended periods and occasionally move about the office/campus.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Nights and weekends as needed.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $89,000-$93,000. The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate at the time of posting. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on qualifications, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
