About the role
Spoken Language Interpreters facilitate health related communication in spoken languages between Health Care Providers (HCPs) and Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients.
Responsibilities
- Help ensure patients receive understandable and respectful care that aligns with their cultural health beliefs, practices, and primary language.
Requirements
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent; bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Completion of a 40-hour medical interpreter training program required within 6 months of hire, with preference for 100-hour training preferred.
- No prior experience in medical interpretation required, but 1 year experience in medical interpretation preferred. Related experience in medical or social services fields is preferred (CNA, MD, RN, social work, etc.).
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology in source and target language as evidenced by passing score on a test approved by MaineHealth Interpreter and Cross-Cultural Services and completion of 40 hour training in Medical Terminology and Interpretation required within six months of hire.
- Native fluency or a comparable skill level in both English and the target language.
