Spirit Defense - Mid-Level Tool Designer

At Boeing’s Spirit AeroSystems Defense Business Unit, you’ll apply engineering principles to design and support airplane manufacturing tools—access equipment, handling/transportation systems, test equipment, gauges, assembly jigs, drill equipment, and more.

Responsibilities

• Develop tooling designs from concept through structural/mechanical analysis to final definition, ensuring compliance with company and governmental processes.
• Identify, design, and implement advanced technologies to improve manufacturing processes.
• Resolve fabrication and maintenance issues using stress analysis and mechanics-of-materials principles.
• Conduct trade and cost studies; integrate define-and-produce activities across tool families to meet definition and manufacturing-plan requirements.
• Provide technical leadership on jig/fixturing methods, hole preparation, automated drilling/fastener systems, test systems, and part handling/transportation.
• Lead process-improvement, product-optimization, and technology-development initiatives to enhance customer service and manufacturing efficiency.
• Interface technical and administrative knowledge across programs, functions, and organizational levels.
• Create detailed fabrication instructions and media for detail, assembly, and digital-database tooling.
• Produce tool layouts and assist in fabrication/verification of tool deliverables.
• Generate computer models and NC data for tooling deliverables (master tooling, flat-pattern layouts, computer-master-database models, etc.).
• Act as liaison, provide producibility/manufacturing input, and offer electronic-measurement services for internal and external customers.
• Monitor quality via statistical process control and other verification methods.
• Collaborate with production manufacturing, product definition, manufacturing engineering, and external customers.

Requirements

• 5+ years of related work experience.
• Active U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship required; clearance active within the past 24 months is acceptable).

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering Technology (preferred).
• Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
• Experience with 3D printing, NC programming, and composite/assembly jig-building processes.
• CAD experience (CATIA V5/V6, NX, 3DX, Siemens, etc.).
• Structural-analysis experience using classical hand calculations and software (NASTRAN/PATRAN, FDA/FEMAP).
• Understanding of structural loading, applied loads, interface loads, and analysis (static, fatigue, deflection, surface).
• SAP experience.

Pay

• Summary pay range: $71,800 – $110,100 (based on candidate experience, qualifications, market, and business considerations).
• Kansas team members may be eligible for a $5,000 state Aviation tax credit for up to five years.
