About the role

Under the close supervision of a supervisory official in the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), this two‑year training program teaches unskilled or semiskilled tasks related to the construction, maintenance, repair, and improvement of structures, facilities, equipment, and grounds at assigned state parks, forests, recreational areas, historic sites, wildlife management areas, marinas, or any other state‑owned facilities within the Natural and Historic Program area. Positions are located at Island Beach State Park (2401 Central Ave, Seaside Park, NJ 08752) and Barnegat Lighthouse State Park (208 Broadway & The Bay, Barnegat Light, NJ 08006). There are 2 existing vacancies. Opening date: 8/28/2026; closing date: 9/18/2026.

Responsibilities

  • Custodial services for patron health and safety
  • Major and minor repairs
  • Snow removal
  • Basic painting
  • Carpentry
  • Maintenance of roadway and outdoor recreation facilities
  • Care and maintenance of park infrastructures, grounds, and outdoor areas including ground and camping area maintenance, janitorial services, CBT projects, and vehicle/equipment maintenance
  • Seven‑day, year‑round operations requiring weekend, holiday, and after‑hour coverage
