UnityPoint-St. Luke's Downtown is seeking a full-time Speech Language Pathologist (SLP or Speech Therapist) with 40-hour work weeks and options for 8 or 9-hour shifts.

About the Role

The Speech Language Pathologist is responsible for evaluating patients and developing treatment programs in alignment with professional scope, state practice acts, licensure, and UnityPoint Health policies. As an integral part of the rehabilitation team, the SLP provides services across the lifespan, tailoring care to the specific clinical setting (e.g., acute hospital, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient, or home care). Responsibilities include accurate documentation, billing, and communication with referring providers and teammates to implement a comprehensive plan of care.

Responsibilities

  • Performs examinations and evaluations to diagnose and prognose patient conditions, determining appropriate interventions based on patient goals and collaborating with the patient, family, and healthcare team.
  • Utilizes evidence-based Speech Therapy interventions to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  • Ensures accurate documentation and billing to communicate patient progress and status to physicians, healthcare professionals, and third-party reimbursement entities.
  • Applies critical thinking to make independent judgments and maintains accountability for assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies of a speech therapist, including maintaining a clean and orderly work environment and adhering to safety and infection control policies.
  • Actively participates in the Rehabilitation Department through joint interventions, communication, and quality assurance programs.
  • Engages in continuous professional development and shares knowledge through networking and research to enhance therapy practice.
  • Assesses and selects appropriate teaching strategies for patient and family education, considering age, culture, gender, readiness to learn, and comprehension level.
  • Prioritizes patient and workplace safety by preventing errors, accidents, and infections, and reporting potential or actual concerns immediately.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree from an accredited Speech Therapy program.
  • Current licensure in good standing to practice in the state of Iowa.
  • Current BLS certification or ability to obtain certification within three months of hire.
  • Completion of four hours of stroke education prior to the end of orientation and annually thereafter.
