About the role

The Speech Pathologist functions under the direction of the Chief Speech Pathologist to provide comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment for pediatric through geriatric patients within the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department. This role requires advanced clinical expertise to assess and manage augmentative and alternative communication needs, developmental and acquired speech and language disorders, cognitive-communication impairments, fluency and voice disorders, and swallowing disorders, including aphasia, apraxia, and dysarthria. The Speech Pathologist practices with a high level of autonomy while providing education and consultation to physicians, therapists, educational specialists, and community providers, coordinating care with referring clinicians, and managing insurance authorization requirements to support timely, effective patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform various evaluative, diagnostic and procedures for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, acute care, ICU, pediatric, and outpatients.
  • Contribute to the functioning of the Speech Pathology section.
  • Maintain Accurate and timely patient records and process necessary billing forms.

Qualifications

  • California Licensed Speech Pathologist
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS), or UC Davis Health CPR
  • Experience in a medical setting
  • Completion of Clinical Fellowship year
  • Maintain professional growth and CEUs as required for licensing and CCCs
  • Renew licenses and certificates annually

Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of appropriate assessment instruments, test administration procedures, scoring, and interpretation
  • Ability to extract pertinent information to relate to patients and/or family members
  • Knowledge of how patients should be responding to treatment, average length of stay in treatment, recognition of appropriate versus inappropriate treatment for each patient
  • Ability to establish programs based on testing results appropriate for each patient
  • Ability to recognize the need for program modification
  • Knowledge of various home programs and organization into individual programs for family implementation
  • Ability to report to referring physician regarding patient diagnosis, skills and prognosis using appropriate terminology and information
  • Ability to extract pertinent information to relate to family members, be empathetic and supportive
  • Ability to maintain patient records and process necessary billing forms and treatment authorizations in prompt, accurate manner
  • Ability to maintain accurate schedule and personal workload accounts
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions given by section chief, including attendance at weekly meetings
  • Knowledge of current therapeutic and evaluative instruments
  • Ability to assume responsibility for other therapists' patients on short notice
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other therapists
  • Ability to provide instruction and supervision, as required, for student interns and medical students
  • Knowledge of community resources
