Speech-Language Pathologist

Reports to: School Principal
Full-time, exempt position (35 hours/week) following the 10-month school calendar as defined by the Board of Education and Collective Bargaining Agreement. Salary and benefits are outlined in the Teacher Collective Bargaining Agreement.

About the Role

Evaluates, diagnoses, and treats students with speech or language disorders, formulates individualized treatment programs, keeps appropriate records, and informs faculty and guardians about students' progress. This position coordinates with teachers, instructional coaches, school psychologists, school social workers, other support staff, students, guardians, and the community.

Responsibilities

• Assesses the needs of students with speech or language disorders and matches their needs with programs available through the educational system.
• Meets with students regularly according to the treatment program schedule, evaluates, and maintains records of students' progress.
• Reports progress to administrators, teachers, and special education teams and meets with them regularly to discuss evaluations of students' skills as demonstrated in class performance and social interaction.
• Reports progress to guardians and meets with them regularly; suggests activities guardians can do with their child to assist and supplement the student's speech therapy program.
• Repeats evaluations on a regular basis to measure progress according to professional guidelines.
• Talks with students to determine their feelings about the program and their progress or any frustrations they may feel about the therapy.
• Establishes and implements small group management structure and rules that ensure academic engagement and the physical and mental safety of all students.
• Ensures safety and security standards for children, staff, and visitors of the school; supervises all students throughout school grounds and on educational trips as necessary.
• Maintains required paperwork for individual student files, attendance and incident reports, and other necessary records.
• Maintains knowledge of research, developments, and best practices in speech-language pathology.
• Recognizes and supports diversity and equity in support of school and district initiatives.
• Fosters an educational philosophy and school climate that encourages cooperation and participation among staff and students; celebrates achievements and successes.
• Participates in faculty meetings, educational conferences, in-service opportunities, workshops, and other training seminars as required.
• Attends work as scheduled and arrives in a timely manner unless a qualified absence has been approved.
• Performs additional related duties within the scope of this position.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in a related subject area.
• Appropriate state license or certification; Speech Language Pathologist Endorsement required.
• At least two years of speech pathology work experience in a school setting is preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Thorough understanding of speech/language development and its relation to academic instruction.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Physical Requirements

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
