Speech Language Pathologist

About the role

The Staff Speech Pathologist provides quality speech and dysphagia evaluations and treatments to patients with communication and/or swallowing deficits, and participates in departmental operations as assigned by the Clinical Director.

Responsibilities

• Identify, assess, and provide treatment for individuals of all ages with communication and dysphagia disorders.
• Manage and supervise programs and services related to human communication and its disorders.
• Counsel individuals with communication disorders, their families, caregivers, and other service providers regarding the disability and its management.
• Screen, identify, assess, interpret, diagnose, and rehabilitate disorders of speech (e.g., articulation, fluency, voice) and language.
• Screen, identify, assess, interpret, diagnose, and rehabilitate disorders of oropharyngeal function (e.g., dysphagia) and related disorders.
• Screen, identify, assess, interpret, diagnose, and rehabilitate cognitive/communication disorders.
• Assess, select, and develop augmentative and alternative communication systems and provide training in their use.
• Assist in record keeping and the department’s charging system.
• Plan and execute discharge processes for treatment programs.
• Document evaluation, treatment plans, goals, progress notes, and discharge summaries for patients treated.
• Perform staff and nursing in-service programs on areas of relevant interest and need.

Requirements

• Communication and hearing skills sufficient for evaluating and treating speech/language disorders.
• Desire to work with individuals with temporary and/or chronic physical, mental, and developmental disabilities.
• Knowledge of medical terminology to understand prescriptions and communicate with physicians and staff.
• Knowledge and experience in administering videofluoroscopic evaluations and therapy for patients with dysphagia (preferred).
• Ability to work with individuals of all ages, from neonates to geriatrics.

Qualifications

• Master’s or doctoral degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
• Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).
• Applicable state license.
• Preferred completion of clinical fellowship year or supervision by a speech pathologist with ASHA’s Certificate of Clinical Competence.

Work is performed under the direction of the Clinical Director and only on written prescription of a licensed physician.
