About the Role
To evaluate patients regarding the application of a wide variety of therapeutic techniques for rehabilitation of speech, language, hearing and oral motor disorders, cognition, and dysphagia.
Core competencies will be assessed primarily on the following patient populations: Cardiac/cardiovascular, neuro, pulmonary, oncology, GI conditions and diseases, developmental delays, CVA/TIA, dysphagia, dysphonia and related disorders.
Responsibilities
- Performs assessments and re-assessments according to unit policy and professional standards of care, collecting accurate subjective and objective data.
- Conducts evaluations and formulates individualized treatment plans, goals, and re-assessments based on current clinical practice standards.
- Identifies and documents potential discharge needs.
- Applies appropriate speech therapy techniques, procedures, exercises, and therapeutic modalities, modifying treatment programs to maximize patient progress.
- Utilizes rehab equipment safely and effectively.
- Completes accurate and timely documentation meeting professional standards.
- Supervises and directs activities of technicians, students, and volunteers.
- Communicates and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team regarding patient status, discharge plans, equipment needs, and recommendations.
- Demonstrates customer service principles and behaviors consistent with Del Sol Medical Center’s vision and values.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Certificate of Clinical Competency or Clinical Fellowship Year by the American Speech Language Hearing Association.
- Licensed by the Texas State Board of Examiners for Speech Language Pathology.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
- MS/MA in Speech Pathology.
Qualifications
Preferred 1-2 years’ experience.
Skills
- Knowledge of and experience with evaluating patients with speech, language, or dysphagia disorders, especially with a geriatric emphasis.
- Comprehensive understanding of speech therapy principles, oral and pharyngeal anatomy, muscular and nervous systems, and general anatomy and physiology.
- Familiarity with disease and post-surgery conditions affecting speech, language, and swallowing functions.
- Proficiency in medical terminology.
- Ability to motivate and work with handicapped individuals to comply with therapy programs.
- Ability to visualize anatomical structures and assess patient progress using sensory, judgmental, measurable, and verifiable criteria.
- Skill in operating various therapeutic modalities within the department.
- Bilingual in English/Spanish.
