Job Summary
A Special Education Teacher is responsible for providing appropriate accommodations and modifications to the set curriculum for their students. Their duties include identifying individual student needs, creating a supportive learning environment, and ensuring students have the necessary resources to succeed.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Coordinates all IEP meetings, transition, assessment plans, and eligibility meetings.
- Manages student cases by ensuring IEPs are updated, prior written notice is provided, and scheduling of initial and reevaluations.
- Prepares yearly instructional outlines and related daily lesson plans covering relevant units of study, specifying objectives, activities, and evaluative methods.
- Continuously evaluates individual and group academic progress through the use of periodic standardized tests, portfolio assessment, and/or relevant evaluation methods and/or instruments.
- Handles discipline independently except for chronic or extreme behavior problems.
- Participates in professional development including PLCs and PODs.
- Maintains an updated inventory of all supplies and materials and equipment in the classroom.
- Maintains class records such as IEPs, test results, student cumulative folders, class charts, daily attendance reports, and progress reports.
- Plans a program of study as much as possible to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students and adjusts teaching methods based on individual differences among students.
- Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
- Prepares for class assignments and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of supervisor.
- Guides the learning process to achieve curriculum goals and, in alignment with these goals, sets clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, ensuring these objectives are clearly communicated to students.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
- Affirms the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
- Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, school policy, and administrative regulations.
- Makes provisions for being available to students and parents of education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
- Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for SPED Instructional Aides and monitors.
- Will assist with Child Find, Parent Training, and other Parent Involvement activities.
- Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
- Establishes, maintains, and supports positive and effective working relationships with colleagues, departments, outside agencies, and stakeholders involving clear communication, collaboration, and mutual respect.
- Utilizes various communication channels, including social media, that can enhance connectivity and engagement, fostering stronger connections and facilitating effective collaboration.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Supports and complies with the Rock Point Community School philosophy, mission, and vision statement.
- Completes four (4) hours of Prevention of Sexual Harassment training annually.
- Completes two (2) hours of SCAN procedures and reporting annually.
- Maintains compliance and confidentiality according to FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act).
Qualifications
- Arizona Department of Special Education Teacher Certification.
- MA degree in Special Education or BA in related field with at least five (5) years’ experience working with special education students.
- Advanced knowledge of special education and gifted and talented education laws and regulations.
- Advanced knowledge of special education program referral process, evaluation, development, and implementation of individual education programs.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- A valid government issued driver’s license or identification card.
- Federal, Arizona, and Navajo Nation background clearances.
