SPED (S/P) Life Skills - Elementary

Position starting: 08/14/2016 – Full-time, ongoing contract

About the Role

Under the general supervision of the School Principal, you will facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through specialized instruction using research-based interventions and district curriculum. This role involves documenting teaching and student progress, addressing individual educational needs, and creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment. You will provide feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.

Key responsibilities include writing and implementing IEP goals and behavior intervention plans to ensure progress for students with mild to moderate disabilities, adhering to timelines, and ensuring compliant meetings. Collaboration with general education teachers and related service providers is essential to support student progress on IEP goals.

Responsibilities

• Organizes and facilitates developmentally appropriate learning opportunities to ensure student participation and improve academic success, fostering a smooth transition to elementary school.
• Adapts classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning within established curriculum guidelines.
• Assesses student progress toward objectives, expectations, and goals to provide feedback to students, parents, and administration.
• Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress, communicating expectations, achievements, and methods for improvement.
• Directs assistant teachers, special education paraeducators, volunteers, and/or student workers to provide an effective classroom program and address individual student needs.
• Collaborates with special education teachers, related service providers, instructional coaches, and colleagues to provide services as outlined in the IEP.
• Manages student behavior to provide a safe and optimal learning environment.
• Monitors preschool students in various educational environments to ensure a safe and positive learning experience.
• Models conversation, manners, clean-up activities, and listening skills to demonstrate appropriate social and interpersonal behavior.
• Prepares written materials (e.g., weekly newsletters, assessment reports, lesson plans) to communicate with parents, document progress, and meet mandated requirements.
• Attends IEP meetings for students as needed.
• Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns and directs issues to appropriate personnel.
• Administers first aid and dispenses medications to meet immediate healthcare needs.
• Responds to inquiries from teachers, parents, and administrators to resolve issues, provide information, or offer direction.
• Participates in meetings to convey or gather information required for job functions.
• Performs other related duties to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

• Special Education (SPED) teaching license is required.
• Complex Support Needs endorsement is required.
