About the Role

Provides support to the instructional program under the direction of an assigned classroom teacher, with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special needs students in regular or self-contained classrooms. Assists in implementing instructional plans, monitoring student behavior, and providing information to appropriate school personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher (e.g., listening to students read, assisting with art projects, cooking, physical education) to support and reinforce classroom objectives and IEP goals.
  • Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., medication) to meet immediate health care needs.
  • Assists students with self-care activities (e.g., toileting, washing, changing diapers, eating, dressing, grooming) to maintain personal hygiene.
  • Attends job-specific trainings (e.g., first aid, behavior management) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
  • Collects data to support teachers in the classroom and prepare reports or process forms.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to assist in evaluating progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
  • Implements, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts and acquire appropriate social and school skills.
  • Maintains instructional materials and manual/electronic files/records (e.g., decorating bulletin boards, making art projects, correcting papers) to ensure availability of items and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitors students during assigned periods in various school environments (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Provides, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success.
  • Attends meetings and in-service presentations (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures) to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Requirements

  • 16+ years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Job-related experience is desired.
