Specimen Control and Receiving Technician - Support Services

20% FTE, working 4-hour shifts 4pm–8pm Monday through Friday with some Saturdays 9am–1pm. Hours may vary based on the operational needs of the department.

About the role

Receive specimens and research kits into the laboratory, check for correct labeling, enter tests into the Laboratory Information System, process specimens, and load them onto instruments or direct to the appropriate work station, technologist, or storage area. Perform basic instrument maintenance (monitoring temperatures and reagents) and clerical duties (filing, mailing, faxing). Interact daily with pathologists, physicians, technologists, clinical staff, nursing unit personnel, and patients.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and log specimens and research kits into the laboratory
  • Verify correct labeling and enter test orders into the Laboratory Information System
  • Process specimens and route them to instruments, technologists, or storage
  • Perform basic instrument maintenance (temperature checks, reagent monitoring)
  • Handle clerical tasks such as filing, mailing, and faxing
  • Communicate daily with pathologists, physicians, technologists, clinical staff, nursing personnel, and patients

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)
  • Some post-secondary education in a healthcare or related science field, including coursework toward Medical Laboratory Technician, Cytotechnologist, Histotechnician, or Medical Laboratory Scientist certification (Preferred)
  • 6 months of experience in a lab, healthcare, customer service, or data entry role (Required)
  • 1 year of healthcare or lab-related work experience (Preferred)
  • Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) certification (American Society for Clinical Pathology) or equivalent (Preferred)

Pay

This position may be eligible for a $500 sign-on bonus. Additional compensation components include evening and night shift differentials and weekend differentials.
