ZGF is seeking an experienced Architectural/Construction Specifications Writer to join our team in Portland, OR. Our team thrives on multi-disciplinary engagement at the intersection of architecture, interiors, and urban design, distinguished by creative and intellectual curiosity. This role is expected to work on-site Monday through Thursday, with remote work optional on Fridays.

About the role

As a Specifications Writer, you will be part of a larger specifications team, offering mentorship and support to design teams and other Specifiers. You will bring a strategic, integrated approach to design and technical project resolution, with a proven track record on complex, multi-phase projects.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in setting direction for project goals, scope, and novel concepts.
  • Edit and maintain project specifications per MasterFormat, SectionFormat, and industry standards.
  • Review, edit, and create technical specification sections.
  • Develop written requirements for products, procedures, and standards on complex projects.
  • Build relationships with product representatives and assist staff in product research.
  • Support ongoing editing and revisions of ZGF template specifications.
  • Occasionally assist with project administration, including responding to RFIs or submittals.
  • Collaborate with internal and external design teams to drive design solutions.
  • Contribute to project quality, schedule, and budget performance.
  • Prioritize tasks across multiple projects while maintaining composure under pressure.

Qualifications

  • Professional architecture degree preferred; related degree considered.
  • Architectural license preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in specifications writing.
  • Experience in Construction Administration for large-scale, technically complex projects.
  • CSI CDT or CCS certificate preferred (not required).
  • Experience with template specification platforms (e.g., RIB SpecLink Cloud, MasterSpec/Specpoint), client standards, and Owner specification templates (Division 00 and 01).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and Bluebeam Studio.
  • Familiarity with knowledge management and building information systems (e.g., Revit).
  • Experience with LEED or other sustainable certification systems.
  • Experience specifying both interiors and exteriors.
  • Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively in a geographically dispersed team.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including excellent spelling, grammar, and typing.

Pay

Base salary range: $111,000–$150,000 per year, depending on experience.
