The Specialty Unit Staff RN - Hospital (Labor & Delivery) position is a key role within Kaiser Permanente, focusing on providing professional nursing care in accordance with established standards and policies. The role involves leading the health care team, utilizing the nursing process, ensuring patient safety, and maintaining a positive patient care experience.

Responsibilities

  • Upholds Kaiser Permanente’s policies and procedures, and applicable state, federal, and local laws.
  • Serves as a leader of the health care team, delegating tasks appropriately, and demonstrating accountability.
  • Understands the scope of practice and escalates issues as necessary.
  • Champions new ideas and leads the change process.
  • Mentors, orients, and coaches others in unit-specific operations and patient care activities.
  • Ensures the plan of care reflects assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Maintains patient safety by adhering to the five rights, preventing patient falls, decubitus ulcers, and nosocomial infections.
  • Ensures optimal pain control and patient comfort, addressing patient anxieties, fears, or concerns.
  • Ensures patients understand medication purposes, side effects, and administration instructions.
  • Documents accurately, legibly, dated, and timed, reflecting the nursing process and interventions.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities and makes comprehensive nursing decisions based on data and assessments.
  • Adheres to workplace safety principles and practices, applies standard precautions, and maintains a safe environment.
  • Provides courteous, respectful, and compassionate care to patients and their families.
  • Supports a collaborative Labor-Management Partnership environment through unit-based teams.
  • Organizes work to minimize overtime and assists in systems improvement.
  • May be required to cross-train to additional perinatal areas.
  • May be required to scrub and circulate as needed.

Requirements

  • 1-year recent (within the last 3 years) full-time equivalent experience in L & D, or successful completion of a KP L&D course (including basic fetal monitoring and NRP) within the last 12 months.
  • Registered Nurse License (California).
  • Basic Life Support from American Heart Association.
  • Advanced Fetal Monitoring Certificate required at hire.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
