Specialty Mechanical Engineer, Level V
Akima Infrastructure Services, LLC (AIS) is seeking Specialty Mechanical Engineers as part of our staff augmentation team supporting the Department of Energy at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas. Successful candidates will be employees of AIS, a premier government contractor, but will take day-to-day direction and assignments from Y-12 staff. Pay, benefits, and employment management functions are provided by AIS.
About the Role
Specialty Mechanical Engineers in the Projects Equipment Design Engineering organization are responsible for creating design and procurement documents for specialty and first-of-a-kind equipment such as glovebox systems, furnaces, high vacuum systems, and metal casting/machining equipment.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with designers to develop build-to-print design packages of custom, specialty equipment.
- Develop procurement documents such as equipment specifications, statements of work, and datasheets.
- Perform calculations and analysis associated with machine design, including finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic studies, kinematic calculations, and heat transfer calculations.
Schedule
- Full-time position requiring a commitment of 10 hours per day, Monday through Thursday.
- Core working hours: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
- No travel expected for this position.
Preferred Experience
- Advanced experience in machine design, preferably with glovebox systems, furnaces, high vacuum systems, and metal casting/machining equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards.
- Experience writing detailed, accurate procurement documents, including design/build equipment specifications and equipment fabrication specifications for custom-designed equipment.
- Experience with engineering calculations/analysis associated with machine design, including finite element analysis, structural and seismic analysis, ergonomic studies, kinematic calculations, and heat transfer calculations.
- Experience leading multi-discipline teams (mechanical, electrical, instrumentation/controls, HVAC, piping, process, and welding) on machine design efforts.
- Experience producing build-to-print equipment fabrication packages, including fabrication drawings, fabrication specifications, procurement documents, and calculations.
- Experience in 3D CAD modeling using PTC Creo and/or SolidWorks.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years' experience with design/specification of custom mechanical equipment.
- 20+ years of total experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET-accredited school.
- Active DOE Q clearance or ability to obtain one.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including physicals, drug screen, and background investigation.

- Job-related pre-placement medical examinations may be required.
- This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance, including participation in an ongoing random drug testing program (Workplace Substance Abuse Program).
This position is contingent upon contract award and funding. Applicants selected may be hired but cannot begin work until funding has been confirmed.
