Specialty Laboratory Technology - Microbiology - Mount Sinai Hospital - Full Time/Evenings (4pm - Midnight incl wknds & hol)

About the Role

To ensure the employee is technically competent, possesses the required education and experience, and demonstrates necessary behavioral skills to perform their responsibilities. The role involves evaluating employee performance, providing appropriate training, and ensuring awareness of the department's and hospital's philosophy, standards, objectives, and policies.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrates the ability to perform clinical, technical, service, and administrative tasks.
• Performs technical procedures in Molecular Pathology, Tumor Cytogenomics, and Flow Cytometry as outlined in policy and procedure manuals.
• Performs periodic, scheduled, and as-needed maintenance on instrumentation and equipment, including documentation of remedial actions for problems encountered.
• Performs quality control and calibration procedures when indicated; verifies in the laboratory information system (LIS) and records on Levy-Jennings charts; signs QC logs.
• Ensures all required Quality Control and calibration procedures are completed by signing out records appropriately per shift, daily, or monthly.
• Maintains all records as per regulatory requirements, including card files, patient requisitions, LIS documentation, and statistical data.
• Consults with the Supervisor or Pathologist on important, conflicting, or out-of-range results (recognized patterns specified in policy).
• Notes inadequate volume and/or abnormal appearance of samples.
• Reviews all critical test results by repeat analysis if necessary and communicates them to Nursing Staff/Physician; notifies Supervisor/Pathologist in extreme cases and logs details in LIS.
• Prioritizes work activities to meet established test result turnaround times and notifies Supervisor if a test cannot be performed or is delayed.
• Assists in inventory control to ensure adequate supplies (QC, reagents, calibrators, and other consumables) are available and stored properly; dates supplies appropriately when placed in use.
• Participates in other projects or duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Lab Management.
• Takes initiative in resolving instrument-related problems and finding alternate options for test processing.
• Uses available time to the department's advantage and assists where needed.
• Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to the age of patients served.
• May be required to perform other duties as assigned or when necessary.

Organizational and Managerial Responsibilities

• Participates in the department's performance improvement activities.
• Maintains patient and employee confidentiality in the management of information.
• Observes the Health Care System's compliance policies.
• Participates in Competency and Proficiency testing programs and reports results to the Supervisor.
• Observes all safety procedures and precautions, including:
  • Uses Personal Protective Equipment such as lab coats, gloves, masks, and shields.
  • Disposes of contaminated waste and samples as specified by hospital and laboratory manuals.
• Wears hospital ID badge at all times while on premises.

Requirements and Qualifications

• B.S. in Medical Technology or equivalent education to meet NYS DOH technologist standards.
• 0-1 year of experience.
• Licensing: Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by DOH/Office of Professions.
• ASCP or NCA certification preferred.

Pay

The salary range for this role is $54.6909 - $67.0585 per hour. Actual salaries depend on experience, education, and operational need. The range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits.
