Primary Responsibilities

The US Medical Science Liaison, Automated Identification and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Solutions (IDAST) serves as a field-based scientific expert supporting Waters Advanced Diagnostics’ portfolio of automated organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and resistance-related diagnostic solutions.

This role is responsible for leading scientific exchange with key external stakeholders, supporting Medical Affairs initiatives, and helping translate IDAST data into clinically meaningful insights for clinical microbiology laboratories, antimicrobial stewardship programs, infectious disease clinicians, pharmacists, and health-system decision-makers.

Waters positions ID/AST as an integrated solution focused on rapid identification, susceptibility testing, and resistance-related insights, distinct from the broader clinical microbiology portfolio of specimen collection, culture media, and manual microbiology products.

A key differentiator of this role is the ability to connect IDAST results to clinical interpretation, antimicrobial stewardship, resistance-informed decision-making, diagnostic stewardship, and implementation within real-world hospital and laboratory workflows.

The greatest value of IDAST is achieved not only through accurate organism identification and susceptibility results, but through how those results are interpreted, communicated, and incorporated into multidisciplinary care decisions. Waters ID/AST solutions focus on timely and accurate identification/susceptibility results to support optimized therapy, antimicrobial stewardship, and action on resistance-related information.

Required Qualifications

  • PharmD with a minimum 3 years of relevant experience in one or more of the following: infectious diseases, antimicrobial stewardship, clinical microbiology, microbiology diagnostics, susceptibility/resistance testing, hospital laboratory or related healthcare/scientific environments
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex scientific and clinical information effectively to a range of stakeholders
  • Experience educating healthcare professionals and interacting with multidisciplinary clinical and laboratory teams
  • Strong knowledge of infectious diseases, antimicrobial use, resistance mechanisms, susceptibility testing, stewardship principles, and/or clinical microbiology laboratory workflows
  • Remote, field-based role with anticipated travel of approximately 50%–60%, depending on geography, customer needs, and meeting/congress/conference activity

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience as an MSL, clinical scientist, infectious disease pharmacist, stewardship pharmacist, microbiology specialist, or in another field-based medical/scientific role
  • Experience working with clinical microbiology laboratories, antimicrobial stewardship programs, infectious disease teams, hospital-based diagnostic implementation efforts, or susceptibility/resistance-focused workflows
  • Familiarity with technologies and workflows relevant to automated organism identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, resistance detection, and laboratory informatics. Water’s ID/AST solution specifically highlights automated ID/AST instrumentation, Phoenix panels, MALDI-based identification, and Synapsys informatics connectivity for stewardship and resistance tracking
  • Strong presentation skills and experience supporting scientific education for both internal and external audiences
  • Ability to engage credibly across both laboratory and clinical stakeholders, including microbiologists, stewardship teams, pharmacists, and ID clinicians
