Specialist, Fleet Safety w/CDL
About the role
We are hiring a Specialist, Fleet Safety w/CDL in Santa Fe Springs, CA. Compensation: $80,000K Annually. Schedule: Monday-Friday (some overnight travel). Travel Required: Los Angeles, CA.
Responsibilities
- Translate company safety standards into operational reality through field audits and monitoring real-time driver performance data.
- Provide direct coaching to drivers and managers on safe driving practices, equipment operation, and efficient routing.
- Leverage data analytics and telematics (Lytx) to drive continuous improvement in road safety performance and reduce motor vehicle accidents (MVAs).
- Ensure strict adherence to company safety policies, regulatory requirements, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Train, coach, and mentor new and existing drivers on safe driving practices, equipment operation, and efficient routing.
- Deliver and continuously enhance the company’s driver training programs for all employees operating commercial vehicles.
- Leverage Lytx video telematics and event data to proactively coach drivers, identify at-risk behaviors, and implement targeted corrective actions to improve driver performance and reduce preventable incidents.
- Promote a strong safety culture by encouraging Good Catch reporting, unsafe condition identification, and timely, effective incident reporting and response.
- Administer driver road tests, vehicle inspections, and qualification evaluations to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Review and validate driver competency through road evaluations, ensuring alignment with DOT regulations and company expectations.
- Conduct HM126F, security awareness, and other required compliance training for drivers and branch personnel.
- Support and participate in audits of drivers, vehicles, and maintenance facilities to ensure operational and regulatory compliance.
- Ensure all DOT and safety-related training requirements are completed, documented, and maintained across all locations.
- Conduct field observations and utilize data (including Lytx insights) to deliver constructive, behavior-based coaching and retraining where deficiencies are identified.
- Perform pre-employment driver assessments, including interviews, ride-alongs, and practical demonstrations.
- Ensure locations maintain proper vehicle maintenance programs, driver inspection processes, and accurate log/ELD compliance.
- Develop, implement, and sustain the Driver Mentor Program to support onboarding, skill development, and performance consistency.
- Reinforce and model the Company’s Zero Incident culture across all operations.
- Communicate and implement Airgas EHS policies and procedures with a focus on reducing accidents, injuries, and property loss.
- Conduct annual driver evaluations and performance reviews, documenting findings and recommending corrective actions.
- Train and certify personnel in proper forklift operation, inspection, and maintenance practices.
- Lead, coordinate, and continuously improve the Driver Mentor Program to ensure effective onboarding and ongoing driver development.
- Assist with internal DOT and SMS compliance audits, preparing detailed reports and actionable recommendations.
- Support accident and injury investigations, utilizing tools such as Lytx video analysis to determine root cause, identify contributing behaviors, and recommend preventative measures.
- Participate in incident review committees and contribute to classification, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Lead and promote safety initiatives, participate in safety meetings, and ensure consistent adherence to safety protocols.
- Design and implement training programs and procedural improvements to enhance driver proficiency, operational efficiency, and overall safety performance.
Qualifications
- Proven experience in the day-to-day execution and enforcement of fleet safety policies and programs.
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert for all aspects of vehicle-related safety.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage data analytics and telematics (Lytx) to monitor real-time driver performance and reduce motor vehicle accidents (MVAs).
- In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations and related regulatory requirements for commercial vehicle operation.
- Experience with vehicle maintenance programs, driver inspection processes, and maintaining accurate log/ELD compliance.
- Familiarity with implementing Airgas EHS policies and procedures and promoting a Zero Incident culture.
- Exceptional ability to train, coach, and mentor drivers and managers, utilizing constructive, behavior-based coaching techniques.
- Skill in designing, developing, and enhancing company driver training programs.
- Ability to conduct thorough field audits and field observations to translate safety standards into operational reality.
- Proficiency in administering driver road tests, vehicle inspections, and qualification evaluations.
- Strong investigational skills to support accident and injury investigations, using tools like Lytx video analysis to determine root cause and recommend preventative measures.
- Ability to perform pre-employment driver assessments (interviews, ride-alongs, practical demonstrations).
- Demonstrated ability to foster a strong safety culture by promoting Good Catch reporting and timely incident reporting and response.
- Experience with conducting annual driver evaluations and performance reviews.
- Ability to conduct specific compliance training including HM126F and security awareness.
- Certified or able to become certified to train and certify personnel in proper forklift operation, inspection, and maintenance practices.
- Experience supporting and assisting with internal DOT and SMS compliance audits.
- Commitment to ensuring proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
