About the role
The primary purpose of the Environmental Specialist is to ensure compliance is met with all environmental regulations, company requirements and permit requirements associated with air, water, waste, hazardous materials, land and biodiversity programs for the Hermosa Project. Assist with inspections, sampling, monitoring, testing, recordkeeping, updating plans and reporting to maintain compliance for a fast-paced site with frequently changing activities and operations. Provide technical assistance and represent company environmental interests to management, employees, governmental/regulatory personnel, and others on matters regarding environmental management and compliance. Research, analyze, prepare information that may include, but is not limited to air quality, water quality rules, regulations, codes, and standards. Provide oversight of documentation of compliance with the various permits, plans, and commitments. Maintain all environmental compliance databases, including Earthsoft EQuIS, including managing data, compliance requirements and environmental reporting.
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and permits, including AZPDES, APP, RCRA, SPCC, CAA, and CWA.
- Execute work in alignment with the South32 Sustainability Policy, Environment & Climate Change Standard, And Other Company Standards, procedures, and policies.
- Promote and adhere to safe workplace practices and meet all company and MSHA safety requirements.
- Support and participate in an inclusive working environment by upholding South32's Values and Code of Business Conduct.
- Interface effectively with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., site personnel, regulatory agencies, government entities, and professional/industry associations).
- Maintain current knowledge of environmental regulations and update environmental management systems accordingly.
- Support change management activities, including implementation of BMPs, review of new chemicals, Environmental Permit to Work, and project kick-off meetings.
- Inform leadership of risks or environmental concerns that could impact the Hermosa Project.
- Develop and adhere to procedures and plans for environmental activities and permitted equipment as required by permits, regulations, and company standards.
- Lead or participate in regular audits and inspections of company operations and contractors to ensure compliance with the Environmental Management System, site policies, procedures, and requirements.
- Assist in implementing sustainability programs including energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reductions, water conservation, and recycling.
- Support EarthSoft EQuIS database for managing data, compliance requirements, and reporting.
- Quantify and track sustainability performance goals and report results.
- Carefully coordinate and support environmental studies and monitoring, including contractor oversight.
Requirements
This role works Tuesday - Friday and is based at the Hermosa Project site, near Patagonia, Arizona.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in environmental compliance, permitting, or similar roles.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance requirements, particularly those applicable to mining operations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word.
- Ability to travel to various locations within the United States as needed.
Skills
- Strong understanding of environmental regulations and compliance requirements.
- Experience with environmental databases and software such as Earthsoft EQuIS.
