About the Role
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Special Education Teacher facilitates student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum, addressing specific educational needs, and creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Develops and administers curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials; translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available time for instruction.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual and small group instruction as needed.
- Instructs students in responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws and administrative regulations.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge through attending seminars, workshops, or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting of student activities, achievement, and attendance.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures student conduct conforms to school standards and maintains a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Coordinates with other professional staff members to evaluate and assess curriculum and participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Selects and requisitions appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment; maintains inventory records.
- Supervises students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day, including school transportation.
- Administers standardized tests in accordance with District testing programs.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators.
Requirements
- Arkansas State Certification as a special education teacher.
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Successful prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade levels preferred.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
- Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and formulation of action plans.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Works in a public school setting.
- May occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
- May occasionally provide student behavior support using appropriate restraint or seclusion techniques for student safety.
- May occasionally provide physical assistance to students during emergency evacuation or lockdown procedures.
- Must be capable of safely traversing all assigned areas of the school facility.
