About the Role

The University of Hartford Magnet School is seeking a Special Education Teacher to provide direct and/or consultative services, both in small group and within the general education setting. The role focuses on maximizing the learning experience of students with special needs in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living. The successful candidate will collaborate with educators and stakeholders to implement district-approved curriculum and address students' individualized needs.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures.
  • Participate in PPTs (Planning and Placement Team meetings) and assist in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students.
  • Assist students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers and pupil personnel staff to design and implement programs addressing students' individualized needs.
  • Coordinate with district representatives, outside agencies, organizations, and state/federal authorities as needed.
  • Serve as a resource for students and parents, providing counseling to support personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management; act as a liaison between home and school.
  • Collect, organize, and maintain data to inform decision-making related to academic and behavioral concerns.
  • Stay current with developments in the educational field through professional development, research, and networking.
  • Maintain accurate and complete record-keeping systems for student information, as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Utilize appropriate educational materials, supplies, and equipment, and maintain inventory records.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing methods, and curriculum/Common Core standards.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Familiarity with data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
  • Strong communication skills with staff, LEAs (Local Education Agencies), students, and parents.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Qualifications

  • State Certification as a Special Education Teacher.
