About the Role

Conducts assessments, testing, and diagnostic examinations of students to identify learning issues and recommend corrective procedures to maximize learning. Participates in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings and assists in developing Individual Educational Plans (IEP) for students. Supports students and teaching staff in implementing IEPs and behavior management plans.

Coordinates with outside agencies, organizations, and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed. Collaborates with administrators and teaching staff to assess individual student abilities and needs, including those with special needs, and familiarizes stakeholders with social work services. Acts as a resource for students and parents, providing counseling to foster personal growth, self-understanding, and behavioral management, while serving as a liaison between home and school.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement IEPs and behavior management plans for students with special needs.
  • Coordinate with external agencies, including state and federal authorities, to support student needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between home and school, providing counseling to students and parents.
  • Stay current with professional knowledge and educational developments through seminars, workshops, research, and professional relationships.
  • Maintain accurate and complete record-keeping systems for student information, as required by district procedures and laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in education and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
  • Assist in the orientation of new teachers and provide in-service training in guidance.
  • Select, requisition, and maintain inventory of appropriate books, aids, supplies, and equipment.
  • Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators.

Requirements

  • State Certification as a Special Education Teacher.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License or ability to provide own transportation.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in an education discipline applicable to teaching.
  • Master’s Degree in Special Education.
  • Successful prior special education teaching experience for the appropriate grade level preferred.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of Special Education principles, theories, testing, and methods, including strategies for students with special needs.
  • Knowledge of differentiated instruction based on student learning styles.
  • Familiarity with data information systems, data analysis, and action plan formulation.
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
  • Proficiency in using computer network systems and software applications.
  • Strong organizational and coordination skills.
  • Effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to engage in self-evaluation and professional growth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Work Environment

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
