Position Purpose

The Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction to students with disabilities in grades Kindergarten through Second Grade. The teacher develops and implements individualized educational programs designed to support students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, communication, and functional needs. The Special Education Teacher collaborates with families, educational technicians, related service providers, and general education staff to ensure students receive appropriate services and access to the curriculum in the least restrictive environment.

Essential Functions

  • Completes all special education documentation accurately, in compliance with federal and state regulations, and submits required paperwork within established timelines.
  • Maintains compliant and confidential special education records and files.
  • Maintains accurate records of student attendance, performance, and progress as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Supports the implementation of the district's educational philosophy, curriculum, and instructional goals.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on district and building committees in order to take part in decision-making process.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain high standards of classroom behavior.
  • Coordinates services across all agency lines and serves as a single point of contact.

Qualifications

  • Valid Maine Department of Education certification with appropriate Special Education endorsement.
  • Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with staff, families, and community agencies.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and instructional skills.
