Special Education Teacher - Broad Ford School

Full-time, exempt position with a 7.6-hour workday and 187-day work year, depending on system needs.

Pay

Salary range: $57,098 - $65,813 (Unit I Teacher Salary Scale).

Responsibilities

• Develop daily lesson plans that reflect IEP goals and regular grade curriculum.
• Develop and implement IEPs for assigned students, coordinating academic, related service areas, and secondary transition within the school.
• Develop and maintain academic and behavioral summaries to reflect student progress.
• Collect and disseminate student information to assist in successful inclusion in the Least Restrictive Environment.
• Maintain open communication with the school and service agencies while respecting student confidentiality.
• Provide ongoing communication and contact with parents/guardians and agency representatives to enhance student progress.
• Attend staff, IEP, and related meetings to review and plan goals, strategies, and update student progress status.
• Maintain and update special education files, IEPs, and all required forms and records per school policy and state/federal requirements.
• Complete required monthly Medicaid billing.
• Participate in the Collaborative Transition Program (CTP).
• Supervise students in various settings (classroom, hallway, restroom, cafeteria, field trips, etc.).
• Prepare/process food and assist in feeding medically fragile students, as necessary.
• Lift, move, and operate adaptive equipment, as needed.
• Assist students with mobility needs (e.g., lifting, positioning, loading/unloading, toileting).
• Supervise instructional assistants assigned to the classroom.
• Support students with behavioral needs and implement countywide behavior strategies.
• Ensure confidentiality of student information and advocate positively for students with disabilities.
• Evaluate student progress using appropriate assessment techniques and data collection tools.
• Take necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Counsel students regarding academic and behavioral problems.
• Confer with parents and students about progress and arrange teacher-parent or teacher-student conferences.
• Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, textbooks, materials, and facilities.
• Account for and order classroom and program equipment and supplies.
• Attend and actively participate in staff/faculty meetings and job-related professional development.
• Improve skills and knowledge in subject matter, instructional techniques, technology, and current trends.
• Plan and supervise assignments for substitutes and volunteers.
• Contribute to the short-term and long-term successes of students, staff, school, and the system.
• Engage in lifelong learning through workshops, professional publications, networks, and organizations.
• Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, self-motivation, and accountability.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Undergraduate or Master’s Degree in Special Education.
• Teaching certificate in special education issued by the Maryland State Department of Education or another state.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including ability to interact with diverse stakeholders (students, staff, administration, parents, community agencies, etc.).
• Proficiency in technology and applications.
• Ability to interpret, explain, present, and use data.
• Ability to understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
• Successful management of confidential information and materials.
• Demonstrated initiative, discretion, leadership, and independent judgment.
• Understanding of and attention to detail, especially regarding student safety and well-being.

Preferred Qualifications

• Three (3) years of teaching experience in special education.
• Teaching certificate in special education issued by the Maryland State Department of Education.
• Knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis principles and their application.
• CPR and First Aid certification.
