About the role

Provides instructional support to special education teacher; Assists in teaching daily living skills, social skills, leisure-time activity skills, specific self-help skills, community access and mobility skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in teaching daily living skills, social skills, leisure-time activity skills, specific self-help skills, community access and mobility skills.
  • Encourages and reinforces students, building self-image and helping them to be responsible.
  • Aids in student behavior management under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Trains students in small groups on basic reading and math skills.
  • Maintains confidentiality and positive working relationships with students and staff.
  • Tracks student progress and collects behavioral data.
  • Consistently follows behavior system and classroom management program.
  • Accompanies students to mainstream classes, supervising and assisting during class and times between classes.
  • Assists students with feeding, personal hygiene, toileting, diapering, changing clothes, etc.
  • May require the lifting, positioning and carrying of students.
  • Aids in planning and supervising field trips and other off-campus activities.
  • Works closely with teachers to implement the teacher's program.
  • Supports students in group and club participation during school hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate Degree, 48 semester hours of college credit or must have passed the Para-Pro Test or be willing to take and pass the Para-Pro Test immediately upon hire.
  • Successful experience working with children at risk.
  • Successful experience as an at-risk teaching assistant.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate Degree, 48 semester hours of college credit or must have passed the Para-Pro Test or be willing to take and pass the Para-Pro Test immediately upon hire; Successful experience working with children at risk; Successful experience as an at-risk teaching assistant.
