About the role

The UCAN Academy and High School is an innovative therapeutic day school in the Humboldt Park and Auburn-Gresham communities. It serves students from diverse backgrounds who have experienced difficulties in public or private school settings. The school aims to help these students see schooling in a positive light and reach their highest potential.

Responsibilities

• Develops and implements curriculum to meet physical, emotional, and creative needs of students.
• Plans specific educational and developmental activities and a schedule of activities within the program outline.
• Diagnoses educational needs using the Kaufman method.
• Develops Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) based on the student’s unique situation.
• Establishes learning objectives and uses pre-planning and classroom teaching to accomplish those objectives.
• Involves all students by utilizing a variety of educational methods to meet students’ individual learning styles.
• Selects, maintains, and inventory educational supplies, and controls utilization of equipment and materials.
• Promotes orderly behavior throughout the school and clearly defines expected student behavior.
• Maintains positive working relationships with coworkers and all agency personnel.
• Attends and participates in outside staffing meetings to meet the educational needs of the students.

Requirements

• Type 10 (ED/BD), LBS1 Unlimited or LBS1 Limited Certification.
• Experience in and ability to teach all subject matter in a self-contained environment.

• Ability to work with students who have diverse needs and backgrounds.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Knowledge of therapeutic methods and crisis intervention techniques.
• Ability to maintain a calm and professional demeanor under pressure.
