About the role
The Secondary Transition Specialist oversees the learning experiences for students and collaborates with campus personnel to organize campus-wide and community activities. This includes looking for learning and social opportunities, scheduling college classes, and ensuring a safe and orderly learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Creates and collaborates with campus personnel to organize campus-wide and community activities, looks for learning and social opportunities, as well as schedules college classes.
- Maintains a safe and orderly learning environment.
- Able to work independently without the consistent supervision of an administrator on site, and without a counselor, behavior interventionist, or nurse on site.
- Plans and implements instructional programs that adhere to system wide goals and priorities and meet the needs, interests, and abilities of students.
- Prepares and documents appropriate lesson plans, based upon modified common core curricula, to teach instructional objectives.
- Creates an instructional environment that is conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students.
- Communicates standards, achievements, and individualized student goals based on student learning profiles to students and parents.
- Mets with students and parents. Maintains complete and accurate student academic, attendance, and disciplinary records.
- Makes observations and assessments of students' academic progress.
- Oversees the appropriate use and care of instructional materials, facilities, and equipment.
- Collaborates with high school IEP Team Chairs, other BCPS FALS/CLS teachers and campus instructors, parents, and community members.
- Attends and contributes to monthly PSFALS meetings and schedules and participates in inter-campus activities.
- Supervises and works collaboratively with paraeducators to support students.
- Supports students in creating portfolios to include resumes.
- Teaches students skills necessary for interviews, vocational training, travel training, and use of public transportation.
- Communicates and supports students and parents through the process of connecting with adult service providers.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in an applicable field.
- Experience working with students in special education preferred.
- Possession of a Maryland Educator Certificate appropriate to the area of assignment.
- OR Possession of, or eligibility for, a Maryland Educator License appropriate to the area of assignment.
Skills
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of pedagogy.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of special education including Individualized Education Programs (IEP).
- Knowledge of curriculum.
- Knowledge of effective instructional techniques.
- Knowledge of instructional materials and equipment.
- Knowledge of assistive technology.
- Ability to maintain confidential information.
- Ability to incorporate differentiation of instruction to meet the needs of special education students.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
- The work of this program is performed in a variety of environments to include campus settings, community settings, and work placements.
- Work may require the ability to navigate the campus and travel throughout the community using public transportation.
Grade Citizenship, Residency or Work VISA in United States Required
10 - Month Pay Scale - Effective January 1, 2026 Salary $61,026 - $120,717 (Effective 1/1/2026)

OTHER COMPENSATION: Position may be eligible for extra duty activities pay, or other student activities pay as defined in the applicable Bargaining Unit Agreement.

Pre-Employment Requirements
- All people employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (per COMAR) completed.
- The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109.
- Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
- If you have military experience, you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
- Official transcripts will be required upon hire and must be sent via e-script/clearinghouse from your university.
- Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
- All newly hired personnel must attend a Benefits and Retirement Orientation meeting.
- Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
