About the role

The Paraeducator Assistant II works in a Special Education classroom, supporting teaching staff in providing individual and group instruction. They assist in preparing lesson outlines and plans, and present subject matter to students. The role involves assisting students with lesson assignments, observing progress, and maintaining classroom discipline.

Responsibilities

• Assists teaching staff in classroom and related areas
• Prepares lesson outlines and plans in assigned areas
• Assists in planning, preparing, and developing teaching aids
• Presents subject matter to students using various teaching methods and techniques
• Assists students individually or in groups with lesson assignments
• Presents or reinforces learning concepts
• Administers and grades examinations and homework assignments
• Observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the classroom teacher
• Confers with classroom teacher and parents on student progress
• Maintains classrooms and audio-visual equipment for use
• Distributes and collects teaching materials
• Operates standard office equipment
• Orders supplies and equipment
• Maintains classroom bulletin boards
• Assists in maintaining student discipline and order on playgrounds, in lunchrooms, school halls, libraries, and study halls
• Supports students with disabilities in various programs including Early Childhood, SIP, Strat, Integrated Kindergarten, Comprehensive Life Skills, Social Intervention Program, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and Vision Impairment

Requirements

The Paraeducator Assistant II must demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the class, such as student instructional activities or personal guidance of students within an organized program. Additional intensive training is required in areas such as student data collection, communication strategies, severe behaviors, and positive behavior management for Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Qualifications

• Completion of 48 semester or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university, desirably in child development, education, special education, or a related field
• One year of experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the class, such as student instructional activities or personal guidance of students within an organized program
• A high school diploma and two years of experience as a Paraeducator aide or demonstrating the ability to perform the duties of the class
• Desirable qualifications: Thirty hours of classroom work and class observation, including 12 class hours in class (orientation, ABA Principles I, Data Collection I), 8 class hours CPI training, 8 class hours ABA Principles II and Data Collection II, and 2 hours in-class observation by PC or BCBA, or Assist

Skills

Knowledge of characteristics of students with disabilities, ability to access and maintain necessary technology and equipment for students with hearing impairments, and proficiency in using assistive technology.
