About the role

Assists in the supervision and instruction of children with special needs, disabilities or delays; observes and documents student progress; implements plans for instruction; provides clerical support to teachers and therapists; adapts classroom activities, assignments and materials; assists with personal hygiene; confers with teachers for evaluation and coordination; implements behavioral plans; instructs children one-on-one or in groups; performs record keeping and clerical functions; prepares/processes food and assists in feeding; monitors students; drives a van or automobile for transportation; uses positive reinforcement strategies; assists in preparing instructional materials and learning aids; administers and scores tests; requisitions, stores, and maintains an inventory of textbooks, instructional materials, supplies and equipment; assists in maintaining a safe and positive learning environment.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Education, or related field
  • One (1) year of professional experience working with children with special needs, disabilities or delays in an educational or similar setting
  • Possess Special Education Para Educator Certificate

Qualifications

  • Required: Associate’s degree or Bachelor’s degree in Education, or related field
  • Preferred: Special Education Para Educator Certificate

  • Effective communication with students, parents, or guardians, staff and administrators
  • Understanding, patient, receptive and confident manner
  • Organizing activities in keeping with the maturity and attention span of assigned students
  • Following written and oral instructions
  • Managing student behavior
  • Using standard office equipment, including personal computer
  • Utilizing a variety of equipment used in the care and handling of students with severe disabilities
  • Preparing and maintaining accurate records

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Schedule
